Edith was at her brothers today and it had been my intention to have a walk-free day and do some catching up. However when I took her to her brothers we went via Half Moon Bay and I was surprised to see that the views across the bay to Barrow and Black Combe were good. Also "Met-man Mooney" was on Radio Cumbria saying that there would be some sun in the Lakes. That was enough for me to load the bag in the car and set off for Rydal.
Route Map.
As I drove along the promenade the views to the Eastern & Far Eastern were clear but dull. However with the promise of better things to come I made my way to the car park at Pelter Bridge, Rydal.
I walked up the lane from the car park to Steps End...
...and my first view over Rydal Water wasn't too bad. There's no sun but the cloud is high and white.
A short walk along the permissive path took me to the old working.
From the old working my route took me along Loughrigg Terrace. Even though there was almost 100% cloud cover it was high and white and it was still quite bright.
Nab Scar across Rydal Water.
Looking over White Moss Common with the lower path err below me.
A left turn here to follow the terrace route with Silver Howe ahead.
Silver Howe as Grasmere comes into view.
There were some nice reflections, which if the sun had been out would have been even better.
It was getting time to make a decision what to do next. There were a number of options....
....but with no Edith to keep me in check and with Radio Cumbria's "Met Man Mooney's" promise of some sun....
.....I started the climb up Loughrigg from the end of the terrace. Now I'm not sure whether this is what my Heart & Lung doctor had in mind when he said " gentle exercise to make the lungs work but without straining" but there were plenty of reasons to stop and look around for Mr Mooney's sun.
As I gained some height Lingmoor, The Crinkles, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes start to appear over Red Bank.
The Coniston Fells looked as if they needed some sun!!
Another breather.
Hard work done now, just a plod to the summit ahead.....is it brightening?.....it looks a bit better to the south.
Almost there and what could be a nice view of Great Langdale.
Made it.....now where's that sun!
Looking southwards there is some brightness but its not doing me much good.
Met Man Mooney I will never listen again!!.....actually we love Radio Cumbria it is all that local radio should be.
A final summit picture and I'm off.
A stop at the cairn overlooking Loughrigg Tarn.
Heading towards Ambleside & Wansfell to pick up the bridleway down to Miller Bridge.
Ivy Crag from the bridleway.
Making my way down to Miller Bridge with Low & High Pike and Red Screes in view.
Fairfield Horseshoe.
And again from lower down with Rydal Hall also in view.
From Miller Bridge I made my way back to Rydal along the back road. Ironically as I drove home the sun did appear so apologies to Mr Mooney.
The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go to the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.
Next Walk: 25th August 2011 - Lake District - Latterbarrow from Wray Castle
