With my neck still quite stiff and painful with my arthritis problems I would normally have given it a miss today. However it was such a glorious morning and that coupled with a not so good forecast for the coming week I decided to give it a go. Edith volunteered for packhorse duties and what gear we deemed necessary was pushed into her rucksack Not wanting to travel far we settled on Arnside which was no hardship being my favourite spot.

Route Map

Early morning at Arnside. We left the car on the promenade near the railway viaduct....

...and set off down the estuary towards New Barns with frequent stops.

Looking over the estuary to the OFL of Hampsfell.

Another look back.

It was a superb morning and we almost had the place to ourselves.

Still Waters.....Big Reflections.

We soon arrived at New Barns and as we were in no rush decided to walk round....

....and pay a visit to the Bob-In Cafe which was just opening.

Suitably refreshed we started the climb up through Copridding Woods to the Knott.

It looked promising for the views as we reached the clearing.

Now at the two benches on our way to the viewpoint and already the trees are getting a tinge of colour.

Partly into the sun, looking over Silverdale and the bay towards home.

Grange & Hampsfell over New Barns from the viewpoint.

And to the Coniston & Langdale fells.

It was a morning of big skies and fantastic views.

We made our way towards the summit but first visited the scree slopes on SE side.

There was more cloud to the east but the views towards Ingleborough were still fairly good.

It must have been around noon by now as the Isle of Man ferry is just approaching Heysham Harbour.

We are now at my favourite spot at the top of Red Hills and looking over New Barns to Grange and Hampsfell.

There didn't appear to be any sign of the cattle and calves from here.

Looking up the River Levens to the distant Whinfell Ridge and the Howgills.

Not surprisingly there were a number of folk about enjoying the day.

We decided to walk down the eastern side of Red Hills and soon found....

....the cattle and calves...

....which gave Dr Doolittle another opportunity to get up close....

....this time with the offering of a pear.

After some time I did manage to drag Edith away and we made our way down Red Hills....

....and back down onto the shore.

A short walk back into Arnside and a very enjoyable....

...Ice Cream on the pier.
