Because we are both retired we are fortunate  that for the majority of the time we can pick and choose our days for walking and therefore the vast majority are done on fine days. This of course hasn't always been the case. It's difficult to fit in over 100 walks a year, mainly in the Lake District, whilst working without doing a large number of bad days. Anyway after a week of not too nice weather I had had enough of sitting at home and in the late morning I decided to give it a go. Edith of course had more sense than I and opted to stay at home leaving me only to decide where to go. Driving along the promenade at Morecambe it looked terribly dark over Lakeland so it was once again off to Silverdale for this walk up my old favourite Arnside Knott. It's a long time since I have put on and taken off my waterproof jacket so many times but that was the nature of the day. Below are the pictures from a dampish day.

Route Map

I parked the car at the roadside near the church and walked back through the village to pick up the field path to the Cove. Regular readers may notice something different about this picture from my last visit here. I'll tell you later.

Looking over the old cottages down the bay towards home. Although I'm in a t-shirt there are a number of showers close by.

Looking over Park Point to Grange and Hampsfell as I make my way across the fields. It is really quite good visibility considering the weather.

There looks to be showers at home as I look back over Know End Point.

I was caught in a short, sharp shower just before reaching the Cove and the jacket went on. Fortunately it didn't last more than a few minutes and had almost stopped as I made my way down to the shore.

It didn't look too inviting looking over to Humphrey Head....

....and even less so down the bay towards home. However it's fine here so onwards!

One of the alpacas with a new haircut.

A short walk up to road from the Cove soon brought me to Holgates Caravan Park where I took the path towards Far Arnside..

Shortly after this picture I was caught again. Heavy and long enough to need the jacket.

Arnside Knott

By the time I had reached the lane to Hollins Farm it had passed over again....

....shouldn't you lot be lying down!

Looking back over Hollins as I make my way up Heathwaite.

The woods on Heathwaite are starting to get an Autumnal tinge.

The showers had eased for the time being and despite the overcast conditions the views were quite good. As I made my way to the viewpoint I could even pick out Blackpool Tower in a small patch of light to right of the Power Stations.

A young family enjoying a picnic at the viewpoint.

Looking down the bay with Blackpool Tower a lot clearer now.

The summit seat.

Grange over New Barns from Red Hills and more showers are moving up the bay.

Lakeland was in the main under cloud.

I descended through the woods to the Arnside - Silverdale top road near Arnside Tower Farm....

...to arrive at the road just as another shower came through. Fortunately I was well sheltered by the trees and waited until it passed...

....before walking down to the farm and up to the tower. Unfortunately just as I was taking this picture another shower arrived so I forgot about the tower and sought the shelter of the woods behind me.

With the shower gone I made my way up into the top end of the Caravan Park....

....from where I made my way through the park and back towards The Cove.

Cove Cottage.

Looks like the other alpaca as had an haircut to!

" Mud, mud, glorious mud"

Back at The Cove and blue skies start to appear..

....and all that is left is the short walk across the fields back to Silverdale.

The answer to the poser in the first picture?.....All the signs etc on The Royal Hotel have been taken down as it is now for sale
