After a few days of miserable wet & windy weather today was the complete opposite. We were away straight after breakfast and around an hour later arrived in Elterwater. Although the NT car park in the village is now re-opened we still parked up just as we entered the village and were soon booted up and away on our walk.
Route Map
The view from where we left the car. After a few days of wet weather there is no shortage of standing water in the area.
The Elterwater Maple Tree is just starting to get its Autumnal colours.
Elterwater Bridge.
We set off alongside Great Langdale Beck along the Cumbria Way towards Elter Water.
The Langdale Pikes and Lingmoor over Elter Water.
There was just enough of a breeze to spoil decent reflections but who cares on a morning such as this.
It would be very easy to just sit here and enjoy the views but there are other places to visit.
Reflections on the River Brathay.
Skelwith Force.
We left the Cumbria Way at Skelwith Bridge to take the steep lane up to Tarn Foot.
At the foot of the lane there was rather unusual collection of traps.
Cottages at Tarn Foot.
We then took the lane that runs past Loughrigg Tarn.
Finding an empty seat it was a wonderful place to linger.
Eventually we set off along the lane heading for Red Bank with the slopes of Loughrigg ahead.
Oaks
From Red Bank we took a walk along the Loughrigg Terrace for a short distance.
A peaceful Grasmere.
Silver How
Seat Sandal, Great Rigg, Heron Pike and Nab Scar,
We made our way back along the Terrace route and along the road to High Close YHA....
....from where we started to drop back into Great Langdale.
Having time to spare we decided to carry on along the lane to Chapel Stile.
Approaching Walthwaite
We walked down into the village to visit the shop...
....who were running there normal advertising campaign. Sandwiches and cold drinks were purchased and taken....
....to the banks of Great Langdale Beck to enjoy sat on this....
....fine slate-built bench.
All that now remained was a gentle stroll alongside the beck...
....back to Elterwater...
....and the car.
