We didn't want to go far or to do much today. Edith wanted to spend some time in the garden and I wanted to see the F1 Singapore Grand Prix and the UCI Road World Championship (Cycling) on the box. It only takes 30 minutes or so to get to Beetham and we both always enjoy this area so the choice was soon made.
Route Map
We left the car in a lay-by on the A6 just south of Beetham near Beetham Hall shown here. Car parking in Beetham is very limited although for those wanting to get nearer parking is available for £1.00/day at the Heron Corn Mill which is on the route. For more information on Beetham Hall I suggest a look HERE which will open in a new page.
As we entered the village we passed the Heron Theatre.....More info HERE
The village stocks. Edith couldn't be persuaded to try them out. Beetham is mentioned in the Domesday book under the name of Biedun.
St Michael and All Angels Church........More info HERE
The Wheatsheaf....A 16th Century country Inn.
The River Bela with the Heron Corn Mill on the left. The site as had a mill on it for over 900 years.
From the car park at the mill we took a path upwards into the Deer Park.
On reaching the Deer Park the first thing is to locate the deer.
From the top of the first rise we could see them near the trees just left of centre. Unfortunately the walker in front of us will probably disturb them.
When they saw the walker they started to move down towards the river. Leaving Edith where she was I made my way around to try and get in front of them.
When they saw me they stopped. Edith was behind them so they weren't sure which way to go.
I managed a couple of fairly close shots before leaving them in peace.
Looking down on Dallam Towers with Whitbarrow behind.
To the north of us a close up of Helsington Barrows and Scout Scar.
Eventually our path took us down to the River Bela.
Canada Geese on the river.
Dallam Tower
We decided to follow the river round to Sandside and then decide what to do when there. This involves crossing the Milnthorpe to Sandside road near Milnthorpe Bridge shown here.
Having crossed the road we made our way along the river.
It's a pleasant enough day, just a pity that the views aren't as good as they could be.
Edith doesn't seem too bothered though having found a new friend to play with.
Looking over the River Bela to Whitbarrow.
We followed the River Bela to where it merges with the River Leven near Sandside.
Normally from Sandside we make our return to Beetham via Haverbracks. Today however we decided to walk back to Dallam Park and take the lane through there.
Dallam Towers.
Looking up to Haverbrack.
Back in Beetham and just time for a cuppa at the tea-room.
And finally.....Farleton Knott as we return to the car.
