With family commitments in the afternoon we wanted something nearby today. We did think of going round to Grange but as we drove along the promenade at Morecambe we could see that the band of low misty clag that as been hanging about for a day or two now was still there. I decided on Arnside knowing that at least we would have the estuary views and if it did clear we would also see Lakeland.

Route Map

It was a beautiful morning when we arrived and parked on the promenade but there was a band of misty clag spoiling distant views....

Looking towards the viaduct from the end of the pier the claggy mist can be seen blocking out the views.

However it won't bother us too much as our route is down the estuary towards New Barns.

There were a number of anglers fishing near the coastguard station. October is probably the best month of the year for the flounders at Arnside.

A look over to Whitbarrow. There isn't much sun on this side of the estuary now as the slopes of the Knott block it out.

More anglers as we approach New Barns and hopefully the sun.

That's better.....back in the sun at New Barns with Hampsfell across the estuary.

Whitbarrow from New Barns.

We left the shore to take the path up through Copridding Wood.

Dappled sunlight in the woods.

A look back on reaching the clearing. The views across to Grange and Hampsfell were OK but the Coniston Fells were lost in the murk.

Another section through the woods before we climb again to the viewpoint...

....pausing for a while at the twin benches to enjoy the beauty of Heathwaite.

Edith makes friends with a Chihuahua cross pup near the seats.

Heathwaite from the viewpoint.

The viewpoint on Arnside Knott. There are etched plates showing the Lakeland fells on the stone plinths also a collection point for the National Trust .....this place doesn't look after itself and all donations large or small would be gratefully accepted.

Humphrey Head over Heathwaite.

From Kents Bank to Grange.

Looking over New Barns to Hampsfell.

The Coniston Fells are conspicuous by there absence.

Looking over Arnside and the viaduct to Whitbarrow.....but no Lakeland.

Approaching the summit seat with the Lover's Tree or Twin Trees to the left.

We walked over to the SE edge for look to a very hazy Ingleborough....

....before visiting the summit trig point.

The views to the east over Farleton Knott were slightly better but nowt to shout about.

An empty summit seat, but there's no time to linger today.

Just a few minutes to get a few pictures from the top of Red Hills.

Before we start our descent....

to find the calves where Edith as per usual spent a few minutes.

Then it was back to the shore for a return to Arnside.

And finally back to the car.....but which one.....it's the silver Ford Ka in the mid-distance.
