---------------------------------------------------------------

I was by myself today, it being a Tuesday Edith was at her brothers for the day. I had spent most of the morning doing some "catch-up" on the website but around 11-30am I had had enough and decided to make the short trip to Middleton for a walk to and around Sunderland Point. I ruled out going direct over the tidal road to Sunderland itself as the tide was just on the ebb and I didn't want to cover the courtesy car in mud. I always enjoy this walk as it next to the sea or tidal estuary and I enjoy seeing what is going on on the water. Today there was an added bonus of some rather nice skies.

Route Map

It was only a 10 minute drive from home to the beach at Middleton Sands. We used to do this walk from home using the shore on the outward leg and the riverside and field paths on the return.

Out in the bay there were a number of vessels. I am told they are involved in the burying of the cable that was laid a few months back as it was not covered properly.

I set off along the track dodging the pools as I went with rather dark views of the Bleasdale fells in the Forest of Bowland ahead of me.

It was rather dark at first but slowly it seemed to be clearing from the south towards the Fylde coast.

It's a tad brighter now looking over towards Clougha Pike with the buildings of Lancaster University below.

Even the Bleasdale Fells look a bit brighter now.

A close up of the Isle of Man ferry as she makes her way up the fairway to Heysham.

A look back across the salt marsh to my start point.

Sunderland Brows Farm

The Isle of Man ferry meanwhile is getting closer.

Still a close up shot but this is the nearest the "Ben My Chree" got to me.

A normal shot with Black Combe behind.

"The Lane".....this will be part of my return route from the river side of the point.

Sambo's Grave......for more info click HERE

The grave as always is neat & tidy thanks mainly to the many children who visit this lonely spot. Because this was a spur of the moment walk I had forgotten to bring a new "Visitor Book" to go in the box, hopefully this will be done next time or by somebody else.

I left the grave to make my way southwards to the point.

Looking across the point which at this point is only a couple of hundred yards wide.

One of the reasons we enjoy this walk is that we often get some big sky pictures. Although the walk had started dull it was starting to improve now.

As I approached the point it was really brightening over the Fylde coast.

Coastal erosion at Sunderland Point.

Looking over to Plover Lighthouse.

I am now on the river side of the point and looking across the River Lune to Crook Farm with the Bowland Hills beyond...

...and here towards Glasson Dock with Clougha Pike behind.

The first part of the return path can be a little rough but a route can easily be picked through it.

The Old Hall.

Approaching Second Terrace.

The footpath and road from Second Terrace to First Terrace.

Dark skies across the Lune.

The whitebait nets are back in action, marked by the line of blue buoys. The gulls were finding something to eat behind them.

First Terrace.

After having a bit of a look around at the boats I made my way back to The Lane...

....which returned me to the west shore near the grave. The skies over the Fylde coast were gorgeous now and although it seems a bit dark the views were rather good and with the aid of the 24 x Optical Zoom....

....Blackpool Tower was brought into view....not too bad for hand-held

Almost back at the car and the shore was being lit up as the sun got through beneath the clouds. I think this was my favourite from the day.

Not quite as dramatic the other way but still quite nice.

And finally.....back to the courtesy car.
