We awoke to a glorious morning and were soon away after breakfast. With nothing planned I left it to Edith to choose our destination and when we she picked this walk there was no argument from me. This short but delightful walk offers some fantastic views particularly on a day such as this. The forecast was however for the day to change but not until later in the day....this forecast was spot on today.

Route Map

I couldn't resist stopping off a Waterhead where the MV Teal was preparing to sail.

Looking across the still waters of Windermere towards the Crinkle Crags and Bowfell.

We were soon parked up at Tarn Hows where there had been a bit of overnight ground frost.

A glimpse of the Langdale Pikes as we make our way to Howgraves.

Looking over The Tarns to Black Fell with the Fairfield fells behind.

A wider view from Howgraves to include the Helvellyn fells.

The Coniston Fells from Howgraves.

Reflections in The Tarns as we make our way to the top of the circular route around.

Passing through the woods.

Approaching the head of The Tarns where left the circular path to take a path off on the right towards the Knipe Fold - High Cross bridleway.

On reaching the bridleway we turned right and soon were at the entrance to the Iron Keld plantation.

Just messing about.

At the top of the path through Iron Keld we passed through the gate and then a sharp turn right to follow a well walked path towards Black Fell.

Black Fell summit (l) and the SE Cairn (r)

The Helvellyn and Fairfield fells as we approach the summit.

Looking towards the fells of Langdale.

Lingmoor and the Langdales from Black Fell.

The trig point on Black Crag.

Looking NE'ly towards Ambleside and the Kentmere Fells with Red Screes to the left.

Looking SE'ly over Windermere. In the distance can be seen the weather front that is meant to arrive around teatime.

We crossed the wall near Black Crag to find ourselves a quiet spot away from the summit for our coffee enjoying this splendid view over Low Arnside towards Pike o'Blisco, the Crinkle Crags and Bowfell.....

....with Lingmoor and the Langdale Pikes to the right.

To our north the dip pf Dunmail Raise.

The Fairfield fells.

It would have been nice to have stayed longer or perhaps as in healthier days to walk crossed over to Holme Fell but sadly neither choice was open to me and it was soon time to depart...

A last look back before we made our way back down through Iron Keld to rejoin the bridleway and to follow it down.

We followed the bridleway down to where the path to Tarn Hows leads off from where we could see the lovely High Arnside Tarn.

Back now at The Tarns and there were some reflections at the sheltered northern end.

A money-tree at the path side.

Almost back now and looking across The Tarns.

As we headed southwards on our way home we hit the weather front that we had seen earlier when on Black Crag and by the time we reached Morecambe it was moving across the bay....

....towards Lakeland. However as can be seen  the sun was still shining on the fells.

That's all folks!!

Next Walk:      11th November 2011 - Lake District - Armistice Day on Brant Fell.

Last Walk:      6th November 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - Arnside Knott and the Pepper Pot.
