It was Armistice Day and a time to remember all those who gave their lives for us. At this point we weren't sure what our plans would be for Remembrance Sunday so we decided on this trip to the South Lakes to find a spot to be at 11am. Unfortunately the weather wasn't up to much but we did find a place that we hadn't visited for many years.

Route Map

It was a nice morning as we drove into Morecambe and it seemed right and proper to stop off at the Cenotaph.

Unfortunately the weather had turned rather dull as we reached the south lakes. We decided to park up near the Glebe at Bowness and take it from there. First a visit to Cockshott Point.

It's the same old story. Blue skies but a band of low claggy murk.

We decided to walk round Cockshott Point to make our way to the Ferry station passing Bell Isle on the way.

What's this!!....oil exploration on Windermere?......fortunately not it's United Utilities doing some work on an underwater pipe.

Looking southwards down a rather gloomy Windermere.

A close up up the "Mallard".

We are now at the Ferry station and still undecided what to do.

The "Mallard" makes its way across from the western side of the lake. The Windermere Ferry has been operating for more than 500 years. The original craft were rowed across the lake, later ferries were steam driven and the most recent ones have had diesel engines. The current ferry 'Mallard' is the largest so far; a modern craft which carries up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers.

The ferry arrives at Ferry Nab...

....and I best move before I get driven over.

With the low claggy stuff appearing to clear we decided to walk up the B5284 to have a walk up Brant Fell, other of AW's Outlying Fells and one that we haven't visited for around 20 years.

We left the A5284 to take a left turn along Lindeth Lane for a short way before taking a footpath off to the left.

There are no marked rights of way to the summit but there are a number of paths. Just follow one, as long as you're going upwards you've got it right.

A look over to School Knott from near the summit.

Looking northwards along Windermere from Brant Fell. We arrived here just before 11am just in time to pay our respects.

Looking southwards down Windermere from Brant Fell. There used to be a summerhouse up here a long time ago according to AW and the gateposts in the previous picture and the iron stubs shown here are the remains of a fence.

We are not high enough to be clear of the claggy stuff but there's nowt I can do about that.

After a while we decided to head down towards Post Knott.

A colourful carpet as we carry on down to pick up the Dales Way.

We picked up the Dale Way and followed it down towards Bowness.

"For those who walk the DALESWAY".......well we've done it in the past so I think we can have a cuppa here.

Down the steep hill into the town...

St Martin's Church, Bowness.

It was still a bit gloomy at the waterside....

...but we are indeed very fortunate to be able to visit this wonderful area regularly.

A last look along Windermere.
