I'm still not feeling anything like right but this was far too good a day to miss. Blue skies and a few clouds always are an encouragement to me so shortly after breakfast we set off with nowhere in particular in mind. However when we reached the promenade at Morecambe the views across the bay were superb and straight away I knew where to go for a gentle walk and hopefully some good views.
I couldn't resist stopping off on the promenade at Morecambe for this view across the bay to the Coniston Fells....
...and to the Fairfield fells.
We were soon parked up at the top of the Kendal - Underbarrow road and after a short walk through a copse we were out in the open with views to the Howgills over Benson Knott.
The route follows the wall to a corner where a left turn completes the navigation. The Whinfell Ridge ahead.
From the corner the route ahead is fairly obvious. Along this section there are two main paths, the one we are taking which stays near the wall and a second to the right along which we will return.
The fells of Kentmere looking splendid under snow.
The Whinfell Ridge as only just caught the snow along its crest.
The Howgills peek out over Benson Knott.
Has we clear the trees alongside the wall the Coniston and Langdale fells make an appearance.
Even on the short climb to the summit I am struggling with my breathing but there are plenty of reasons to stop and admire the beauty that surrounds us.
One last pull up to the summit and there are others enjoying the views.
Now on the summit and South Lakeland is laid out before us. The Coniston Fells...
The Crinkle Crags and Bowfell over Pike O'Blisco.
Clouds swirl around the snowy Langdale Pikes.
Wansfell with the Fairfield Horse behind.
Looking over Sour Howes and Red Screes to Fairfield.
Looking to the head of my beloved Kentmere.
Potter Fell with the Shap fells behind.
Distant Howgills.....
,,,,and close-up Howgills
Frosty Fungi as we start our return journey.
A look over the top of Kettlewell Crag and Benson Knott to the Howgills.
A final look back.
A look towards Middleton Fell as we return to the car.
