---------------------------------------------------------------

The only redeeming feature of these mid-December days is that sunrise doesn't occur until around 08:30hrs. Now even I can just about manage to get myself moving by then so with what appeared at first to be a glorious morning I set off for this short local walk. There were no problems with tidal issues as high water wasn't until around 13:00hrs and I would be back well before then.

Route Map....it was just the simple, shorter version this morning.

I arrived at my parking space just as the sun was rising above the Bowland hills across the river. The road from Overton was very muddy this morning but there are no problems with the tide.

A look across and up the River Lune as I make my way to First Terrace.

Early morning sunlight lights up the shore and houses at the start of First Terrace....

.....unfortunately the sun wouldn't last too long as it disappeared into a bank of low cloud.

However it did make for some interesting skies as I looked towards Second Terrace before I turned right along The Lane to the West Shore.

On reaching the West Shore the skies were certainly less interesting but with a shrug of the shoulders I turned southwards for the short walk to....

Sambo's Grave.....For any reader not aware of the history behind this lonely grave there is a link at the end of this report which should enlighten. Failing that Mr Google will speed all the information towards you in seconds.

One of my reasons for coming here this morning was to check that the grave was tidy for Christmas. As is usually the case there was very little to do.

From the grave I continued on southwards towards Sunderland Point.

Looking out to the bottom of the Heysham fairway I could see a container ship making its way towards the harbour.

A look back as I approach the Point.

Starting to round the Point now with Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea behind me and the River Lune ahead.

The container ship is just about to enter the harbour.

The erosion at the point continues.

Looking over the River Lune to Crook Farm with Hawthornthwaite Fell behind.

This section of the foreshore is a bit stony. It's best to keep right up to the edge where there is a bit of a path or, if dry, go lower down to the more level patch at the the edge.

Approaching the Old Hall or Sunderland Hall.

A cloud-topped Hawthornthwaite Fell across the river.

Approaching Second Terrace. Most of the buildings along here were originally warehouses for the storage of the ships cargo.

The road across to First Terrace which is not passable at high water on the higher tides.

Looking across the river towards Glasson Dock with Clougha Pike behind. The nets laid on the mud are for catching whitebait. They are anchored in position to fish the ebb tide.

And finally.....back to the car.

For those of you who find themselves, like us fascinated by this wonderful place here is a link to the website of the Friends of Sunderland Point. There you will find much more information on the area than I have time to provide.

Next Walk:      18th December 2011 - Lake District - Cunswick Fell.

Last Walk:     12th December 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - A bit of a tester on the Knott.
