It had been almost 3 weeks since I had had a walk. On our last walk up Farleton Knott I got a bit of a chill which coupled with my low immune system knocked me back for a few days and then the colder weather arrived. The cold weather leaves me in a Catch 22 position until my system settles down. If I go out in the cold it seems to make my lung problems worse yet if I don't exercise I feel as though the airways are narrowing and that makes breathing difficult. I had also been having a few chest pains and didn't want to do too much until I had seen my specialist at the Lancaster Infirmary. Anyway by now I wanted to see how I managed on a short simple walk so it was off to Arnside we went for this walk up the Knott.
Route Map....because of the way I was feeling I decided on shortening this already short walk a little more and also reducing the ascent by parking on the New Barns road.
Our start point today. The lane opposite leads up to a car park on the Knott just below the viewpoint.
A few hundred yards up the lane we took this path off to the left through Red Hills.
The highland cattle are still about but we left them in peace today.
At the far end of Red Hills we doubled back on ourselves to start the climb up the Knott.
The weather up to now had been mainly quite sunny but there were a few showers lurking in the distance.
A distant Gummer's How catches some sun.
Not having done anything for around 3 weeks I was really struggling with my breathing even up this gentle slope. However a number of stops offered decent views....here to Grange and Hampsfell....
...and again to Farleton Knott which had been my last walk.
Nearly at the top of Red Hills and things are about to change....
..as a band of light rain sweeps by from the south. Fortunately there are some trees nearby which offer a little shelter...
....whilst admiring a number of rainbows across the estuary.
A short stroll took us the trig point on the Knott...
...and then to the summit seat.
The walk from the summit to the viewpoint was in a mixture of sunshine and showers.
Looking over a sunny New Barns to a rather dull and grey Grange.
Showers over Yewbarrow and Whitbarrow.
It had been a bit of a struggle for me today but well worth the effort. Everybody has their own favourite spot for various reasons and this is mine.
A view down Morecambe Bay towards home as we make our way down to pick up the bridleway...
....which will take us past the car park ...
....and back down the lane to the car.
Next Walk: 15th December 2011 - NW Lancashire - A morning walk at Sunderland Point.
Last Walk: 24th November 2011 - South Cumbria - 150 up in 2011 on Holme Park Fell & Farleton Knott
