Ideally I would have liked my 150th walk of 2011 to have been done on a better day weather-wise but with the forecast not looking too great for the next few days we decided to give it a go today. There didn't seem much point in traipsing all the way to the Lakes and you dear reader must be fed up to the back teeth of Arnside by now so we picked this walk. If you fancy a wander about up here it's probably best left to springtime when the orchids are in flower as they were on my last visit HERE

Route Map

We left the car just off the A6070 road to Holme next to the canal. As we were getting ready a group of walkers came along the canal and took the road towards Holme Fell.

Farleton Knott from the road as we make our way towards Holme Park Farm.

We left the road to take the path towards Holme Fell.

The group of walkers are now ahead of us. There were about 30 in total (best guess) and I was wondering where they had set off from.

It wasn't the brightest of days at this point but hopefully it will get better.

The lane from the farm eventually leads out onto Holme Park Fell.

There are many paths from the path over the fell leading towards Farleton Knott.

An old limekiln near the path.

A look back as we near the highest point on this path.

The walking club ahead of us left the path here to have a "buttie stop". We would see them again later but only in the distance.

Just before the gate ahead a path winds off to the left. We would take this path towards Farleton Knott.

Within minutes of taking the path we were amongst some wonderful limestone scenery.

A look back. Holme Park Quarry can be seen through the trees and Arnside Knott to the right.

Looking back over the quarry face towards Warton Crag.

There are plenty of examples of nature's balancing acts along the way.

A very hazy view of Ingleborough in the distance.

A brief glimpse of the summit but there's still a little way to go yet.

Normally we would have have just headed across the limestone to the summit but everything was quite slippy today and with my recent record we decided on picking up this small track which avoided most of the limestone pavement.

Before too long we were on the highest part of the fell.

There was quite a good breeze on the top and after having a haircut yesterday the headgear made an appearance.

Unfortunately it is still hazy and views are restricted. Here looking to Warton Crag...

....and here over the M6 and Holme to Arnside Knott with Grange behind.

Across the River Kent to Whitbarrow with Gummer's How behind.

Looking over to the cairn on Farleton Knott which we will be visiting next,

We made our way down to the wall which was crossed via a stile.

Looking over to Middleton Fell and Great Coum.

A distant and hazy Ingleborough.

A finely constructed shelter just below the cairn.

Almost there.

Farleton Knott.....with a cool breeze we didn't linger too long...

....preferring to lose a little height and gain some shelter behind the crags below.

We found a sheltered spot below the crags for our coffee. In the meantime the walking group had arrived on Farleton Knott.

We then made our way Farleton Fell...

...to pick up this track down to the road.

After a rather muddy and slippy descent we eventually reached the single tracked Puddlemire Lane which we followed down to join the Lancaster Canal at Kiln Hall.

On our way down we passed a number of these fungi in the hedgerows.

Kiln Hall with Farleton Fell behind.

Our route back was now, in the main along the tow-path of the canal.

Farleton Knott as we approach Duke's Bridge. At Duke's Bridge we would leave the canal for a short while. The tow-path does continue but comes to an abrupt halt where the canal is culverted to pass under the M6.

Having left the tow-path we walked along the road to cross the M6. The number of cars parked here would suggest that this was the start point for the walking group that we saw earlier.

After crossing the M6 our path goes across a field adjacent to the motorway....

....to rejoin the tow-path.

Almost back now and a last look back to Farleton Knott.

And finally....back to the car.
