---------------------------------------------------------------

I had felt OK after our short walk around Sunderland Point a couple of days earlier so with a glorious morning I wanted to try something a little more testing. In addition to my long-term breathing problems I have been bothered for a while with some low back pain and some neck pain both probably arthritic in nature. Neither stops me from walking but when at there worst they take a lot of the pleasure away. We decided on this walk as it gave me a number of options for cutting it short if necessary. Happily the pain stayed manageable until we were almost back.

Route Map

Having left the car at the roadside near the church we walked back through the village. There doesn't seem to be much happening at the old pub as yet.

We took the path across The Lots towards The Cove. Views were quite good, here over to Kent's Bank and the OFL of Humphrey Head....

....further right to Grange and the OFL of Hampsfell.

A look back over the shoreside cottages to the power stations at Heysham.

All in all a quite lovely morning and rather mild for early January.

A look down to The Cove with Park Point and Grange beyond.

The Cove. From here there is a short walk up the lane to join the Silverdale - Arnside road....

....passing a smallholding with attendant alpaca on the right...

....and Cove Cottage on the left.

Turning left at the road we soon cross over into Cumbria to enter Holgates Caravan Park where we follow the fingerposts across the bottom of the park.

Our route leads us across the fields towards Far Arnside with views across the bay to our left...

....and to our right today's destination....Arnside Knott, in my opinion the finest little outcrop in South Cumbria.

After crossing the fields we once again cross the Silverdale - Arnside road to take the lane towards Hollins Farm ahead...

....where Edith met the first of a number of friends.

New fencing in the field above the farm now mean that the goats are further away but with the aid of the camera this one is brought nearer.

Having walking up Heathwaite we made our way up the Knott to arrive at the two bench seats.

Although taken directly into the low sun I liked the way the bay was lit up and included this.

Edith meanwhile was getting reacquainted with an old friend.  "Wally" who we have met a couple of times before on the Knott recognised her immediately and was soon into the doggie biscuits.

I think in this shot with his owner he still had his eye on Edith thinking there may be more biscuits.

From the bench seats we made our way to the view point.

Looking over New Barns to Grange and Hampsfell. Regular readers will have seen these views many times I know and some may be thinking along the lines of "not again!" but to the eye the view is ever changing. Seasons, tides, weather all make for a scene that is continually changing.

Distant Coniston Fells over the estuary.

Eastern and Far Eastern fells are seen behind Whitbarrow.

To the right, The Howgills over Haverbrack.

From the viewpoint we made our way towards the summit passing the Lover's Tree / Twin Tree on our way ....

..to first the trig point...

....and then the summit seat.

Edith makes another friend as we make our way to Red Hills.

I prefer the views from the top of Red Hills to those from the viewpoint, they don't seem as cluttered with shrubs etc.

And this is my favourite view from here.

From Red Hills we descended to the right and then down to the road yet again, here with a view of Farleton Knott over Beetham Fell.

Once at the road a right turn took us to the lane leading to Arnside Tower farm with a glimpse of Ingleborough to the far right.

After walking down to the farm a short climb up took us to....

...the ruins of Arnside Tower where we had a break for coffee...

Coffee break view.

A short climb from the Tower brought us back into Holgates Caravan Park, this time near the top. We then followed a waymarked track which took us through the woods and down into...

Elmslack from where it was only a short walk down a quiet road into Silverdale...

....passing first the Methodist Church...

...and then St, John's Parish Church where the car was parked nearby.

Next Walk:      13th January 2012 - Lake District - Grandsire & School Knott from Cleabarrow.

Last Walk:       9th January 2012 - NW Lancashire - A sunset walk at Sunderland Point.
