The colder weather had caught me out again yesterday and my breathing was more difficult. Edith didn't want me to go for a walk at all but after reassuring her that it would be an easy valley walk she gave way and shortly after breakfast we were on our way to Elterwater.
Route Map
Having parked in the NT car park at Elterwater we crossed over the bridge to take the road towards the quarry.
We left the road after a short while to drop down alongside the Great Langdale Beck.
The weir on the beck.
We followed the beck towards Chapel Stile whose church can be seen here through the trees.
At Chapel Stile we took the path behind the school leading towards Thrang Farm.
A look over to Chapel Stile from near Thrang Farm.
Reflections in Great Langdale Beck at New Bridge.
Up to here it had been mainly sunny but as we came abreast of Baysbrown it started to cloud over.
Looking over to Baysbrown it was now rather dull....
...although the tops of the Langdale Pikes were still catching the sun.
I had thought of carrying on up the valley to the New Dungeon Ghyll but with the day apparently getting duller and the boss-lady giving me earache I decided to return from here.
Looking down the valley it really didn't look too bright at all...
....so we made our way over to Oak Howe...
....where instead of taking the path up the valley....
...our return path was along the southern side of the valley towards Baysbrown. This side of the valley catches little, if any of the winter sunshine and in places the path was a bit icy but easily avoidable.
Around this point that old favourite " Sod's Law " started to kick in. The bank of cloud that had covered us starting to thin and move away....
....but the decision had already been made to return to Elterwater....
....and Edith was in no mood to argue with as my coughing and spluttering returned.
Looking down the valley it had now returned to a fine sunny day...
...but for a while our path led us through the shaded woods...
....towards Baysbrown.
We were tempted at Baysbrown to take the path across the campsite back to our original path which was still in the sun.
How different winter's sunny days must be for the residents of Chapel Stile. Whilst they are enjoying it the occupants of Baysbrown can only watch it across the valley.
Before long we were passing through the quarry with a view of the Pikes....
....and to Loughrigg behind the face of the quarry.
Back at Elterwater and Edith agreed to the short walk down to Elter Water with this view of Loughrigg on the way.
Looking across Elter Water to the Langdales.
And finally across still frosted fields.
