The Easter weekend has arrived and with the typical Bank Holiday weather. We had no intentions of visiting the Lakes during the holiday period so we settled for this walk along the River Kent with a return along the Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal. It seems a while since we last walked along this way and we both enjoyed it.
Route
We left the car at the roadside near Sedgwick Bridge where the River Kent flows through a limestone gorge.
The River Kent as we walk along the road towards Sedgwick.
We left the road to take the lane past this cottage towards the riverside path.
Before long we reached the riverbank near the footbridge over the river.
It was a rather dull and overcast morning but at least it stayed fine and the walk along the river was easy going.
After a short while the path leaves the river to follow a lane for a short distance...
...before leaving it to take the path through the woods...
...with a view over to Larkrigg Farm with The Helm behind.
Looking down on the river as we make our way through the woods.
Leaving the woods we passed this memorial seat.
We are nearing the end of our riverside section now as we approach Hawes Bridge with a view towards the Whinfell Ridge behind Crowpark.
Looking upstream at the River Kent from Hawes Bridge.
A look over the river to Prizet as we walk up the lane...
...for a short way to gain access to the towpath of the Lancaster Canal. Well it would be the towpath of the canal if it was still here but unfortunately this section of the Northern Reaches is now dry and in places as been infilled. However the towpath is still a right of way and makes for an easy return.
If you fancy a paddle just go to the left ;-)
Looking over Cracalt Farm to The Helm. The Helm is part owned by The Friends of the Lake District the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future.
A look back as we progress.
Well it's April.....there are loads of them about now.
Looking over towards Scout Scar our last walk.
Maybe one day it will all be re-opened but I'm afraid I won't see it.
Passing by Larkrigg which we saw earlier from the other side.
The route then passes through the woods of Larkrigg Spring before...
...crossing the fields towards Sedgwick.
Looking down on Sedgwick from the aqueduct. We left the canal here to make our way along the road back to the car.
Sedgwick House was built in 1868 for William Henry Wakefield whose family owned a number of gunpowder factories in Cumbria....
....the house is now private flats.
We were soon back alongside the river...
....and finally.....back to the car.
