This was an absolutely delightful walk on good paths apart from a soggy section between Hudson Place & Jenkinson Place. On reflection maybe it would be better done as a late afternoon walk as in the initial stages all the views seemed to be directly into the sun. As my photographic abilities are simply, camera on "Auto" and point & shoot with no filters this caused a few problems. The path from Fang Brow to High Nook Tarn is a well crafted terrace posing no problems. Known by some as the "Balcony Path" it is said to be part of an old corpse-road from Loweswater to St. Bees although others say that our return route through Holme Wood is the old corpse road. From High Nook tarn our route took us down to Maggie's Bridge from where we returned through Holme Wood via Hudson Place and Jenkinson Place.

A look back to Fangs Brow farm as we set off along the old corpse road.

We had passed our parking place a number of times during the previous few days and hadn't seen anybody parked there. This morning, even though it was only about 9am there were 4 cars there when we arrived.

A couple of locals enjoy the early morning sunshine.

Loweswater comes into view with Fellbarrow, Darling Fell and Low Fell behind it and Whiteside in the distance.

Beautiful views but a combination of being stood in the shade and the sun ahead made capturing them difficult.

After a while the path drops to the left to go around the eastern end of Burnbank Fell. Whiteside and Grasmoor ahead.

The path is very easy walking and even after all the rain was well drained. It gently rises from here to its hihest point near the top of the woods at Carling Knott.

Darling Fell and Low Fell across Loweswater.

The path here contours around the fellside to cross Holme Beck.

Crossing Holme Beck

We have passed the highest point of the walk now and the path starts its descent to Highnook Beck.

Descending towards High Nook tarn with Black Crag behind it and Hen Comb to the left.

A look down the Lorton valley

Crossing Highnook Beck.

Our descent path can be seen through the bracken on the left.

Before we descended further a visit to High Nook Tarn with Blake Fell in centre picture.

Descending to High Nook Farm

High Nook Farm

Whiteside and Grasmoor as we make our way to Maggie's Bridge.

Mellbreak

Looking back from near Maggie's Bridge. Carling Knott is to the right.

We are now on the track from Maggie's Bridge to Watergate Farm with Carling Knott on the left and the NE spur of Burnbank Fell on the right.

Across Loweswater to Darling Fell and Low Fell.

Watergate Farm and Carling Knott.

Our route now takes us through the deligtful Holme Wood

After leaving the wood the path gently rises to Hudson Place.

Hudson Place.

Just after Hudson Place make sure you get the path to the left or you will end up with a walk back along the road to Fang Brow.

The short section from Hudson Place to Jenkinson Place seen ahead was the only soggy section along the route and most of the wet bits were avoidable.

A look back.

Jenkinson Place. The path from here carries on towards Iredale Place but branches left and upwards just before reaching it.

Looking back as we climb up to rejoin our original track

And finally................back to the car.

Next Walk:      11th September 2008 -- Lake District (NW) -- Dent and Flat Fell from Wath Bridge
