This was to be the final walk of our holiday and the one I was looking forward to as this was new territory for us. We followed the Wainwright route as shown in his "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" book apart from the descent from Dent. This was mainly because I had started with a minor "flare-up" with the RA and wasn't sure that I would complete the walk. Doing it this way gave me more options, at least I thought it did. Anyway I managed to complete it with no trouble.

Wath Bridge near Cleator Moor where we left the car in a lay-by.

Looking back to Claetor Moor as we walk up the Nannycatch Road. It is possible to drive up the road and park at the top but my uual obstinancy says if it was good enough for AW to walk up it's blah blah blah etc...

AW's route went up Flat Fell first but I had decided to do Dent first as it is the highest. Our route took us up this forest road to the first bifurcation at which we took the right hand branch which we followed to just beyond it's highest point from where a track headed westward and upward to Dent.

Taken from around the point we left the forest track and looking to Lank Rigg. Our path down to Nannycatch Gate can be seen in centre picture.

Looking over the end of Flat Fell towards Grike with Grat Borne and Grasmoor in the far distance.

To the south the outline of Black Combe.

On our way up towards the summit of Dent with a look back to Lank Rigg.

A view to Knock Murton with Blake Fell behind.

Dent summit cairn.

The shelter to the westward.

From the shelter we retaced our steps to the forest road before making the descent to Nannycatch Gate

Edith encourages yours truly to act doggie!!

But she forgets he who as the camera usually as the last laugh. A none too gracefull way through the deer fence.

Sunshine on Flat Fell......Ever wondered how it got that name?

On the descent to Nannycatch Gate with the Lowther Park plantation to the right

AW's route in his "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" book looks to have come up from the left of Raven Crag but this path is a far better route.

Eventually we ended up in the valley to the south of Raven Crag. This section, after all the rain was to say the least a little squelchy.

A short walk soon brought us to Nanycatch Gate and our path ahead up Flat Fell.

Ascending Flat Fell which seemed steeper than it looked, with a look back to Nannycatch Gate and Raven Crag.

Dent from Flat Fell summit cairn

The "sweptback" hairstyle on Flat Fell

Looking over the Cold Fell road and the slopes of Grike to Great Borne and the Floutern Pass with Grasmoor in the distance. Look carefully in the bottom right-hand corner near the road and you will see the Kinniside Stone Circle. This is not the original prehistoric stone circle but a modern creation of 11 stones in an 18 metre circle set in concrete.

Knock Murton with Burnbank, Blake and Gavel Fells .

An easy grassy descent back to the Nannycatch Road.

I must admit the thought of why I didn't drive up here did cross my mind once or twice

But were then dispelled when we came across this chappie. I think it's a male Indian Blue Peacock.

I assume it belonged to this place but as it does not appear on the OS Map I've no idea what it's called

Back at Wath Bridge

And finally ....back to the car
