Another fabulous days walking in the Western Dales and my longest walk in over 9 months. A route picked to make the ascent as gentle as possible and to avoid the masses. We only came within speaking distance of 3 people all day, 2 ladies at Wash Dub Field and a chap from Horton at Long Scar. This walk could be extended to take in the magnificent limestone pavements of Moughton Scars but I thought that might be a little to adventurous today.
Clapham where we left the car at the roadside.
Passing St James Church
The two tunnels....watch out for mountain bikers!!
Our path climbs and then bifurcates, to the left is Long Lane our return route, straight ahead Thwaite Lane.
We are now on Thwaite Lane looking over Long Lane to Ingleborough and Simon Fell
Thwaite Lane
A look southwards to the Bowland Fells
Feeding time
Looking over to Moughton and somewhere over there is Wharfe
Robin Procter's Scar and Norber
Yummy.....lots about
Pendle Hill just peeks out above the Bowland Fells
A bridge over Austwick Beck as we follow the lane to Wharfe
Austwick Beck from Dam House bridge
Approaching Wharfe.
From Wharfe we took the bridleway up the valley to the bridge at Wash Dub field
I think this spot is one of the few places that I have rarely found unpopulated when I visit. Today there were two ladies enjoying their lunch when we arrived.
For Info
Leaving the ladies to enjoy their lunch we crossed over the bridge to the other side of the valley on our way to Crummack Farm.
Looking over to Hunterstye and Studrigg Scar.
Down the valley to Smearsett & Pot Scar where we were on the last walk
A distant Pendle Hill
Arrival at Crummack Farm with Pen y ghent poking its top over Moughton Scars
On the final climb to Long Scar
Ingleborough ahead.
Magic!...probably my favourite view of Pen y ghent looking over the magnificent limestone pavement of Moughton Scar.
The boss on Long Scar
And with some guy who keeps following her around.....picture courtesy of a chap from Horton who comes here regularly.
After chatting awhile our new friend makes his way back to Horton.
Whilst we head down to the top of Long Lane.
A peek into Trow Gill
The choice now was down the lane or drop down into Clapdale. The lane won as it kept the views and avoided those going to Ingleborough Cave
Up or down it lives up to its name
A peek down to the cave
Nearly back as we approach the tunnels
Back into Clapham and a visit to the cafe.
Next Walk: 10th July 2009 - Lake District (SE) - Cartmel Fell (Raven's Barrow)
Last Walk: 5th July 2009 - Yorkshire Dales (W) - Smearsett Scar & Pot Scar from Austwick
