Weekends are never the best time for walking for us as we like to spend some time with the grandchildren. Today however we had the morning clear so it was a quick dash to Arnside for our old favourite. A very poor day for pictures once again but at least it kept fine for us.

Whitbarrow over the railway embankment from where we parked the car.

Arnside Pier with Grange over the Kent estuary

Walking along the foreshore to avoid the Sunday morning traffic

Fine Victorian (I think!) limestone buildings

Heading along the shore in the direction of New Barns. Today however we take a lane off to the left near the red lifebouy.

At the top of this lane we took the road that goes paty way up the Knott

A former miners convalescent home, now luxury apartments.

For a change we decided to walk through Copridding Wood

Although well walked I think it is probably more to do with locals and dog walkers as visitors tend to aim straight for the summit

Eventually we cam out onto the main path up from New Barns

Not sure what this was for. The tank was full of water, maybe for the cows that graze this part of the Knott in the hot weather of the previous week.

Gaining a little height as we make our way to the viewpoint

Unfotunately distance views were not an option today. Here we are looking over New Barns to Grange over Sands

A look up the estuary to Whitbarrow

and in close up with Eastern & Far Eastern fells just visible

Making our way to the summit with a view down Morecambe Bay to home.

The Lovers tree

Arnside Knott summit

Looking towards Storth

Descending Red Hills

Walking back towards the old convalescent home

A bad hair day!!!

And somewhat tidier.

Dropping down to the beach and cafe which was unfortunately for us full. Never mind I'll settle for an ice cream at Arnside

Walking back to Arnside

This van puzzled me so after a few enquires I found it was supporting a power boat challenge to raise money for the RNLI and Cancer and Leukemia in children (CLIC). Today's leg was from Fleetwood to Roa Island near Barrow via Arnside. However things didn't go exactly as planned. Below is there log for today.

FLEETWOOD TO RAMPSIDE ROA ISLAND 12th July
12/07/2009

After a hard day plagued by niggly throttle cable problems we eventually made it to Roa Island we were supposed to be carrying out routine maintenance today but as it had taken most of the day to cover some 30miles we were now looking at the work being carried out today with us moving tomorrow . We had to be away from Fleetwood by 1100 Hours and we actually made it, moving across to Morecombe bay and then sat waiting for the tide to get into Arnside after some time it was decided by the land crew to send us to Glasson Docks as this would give us more time as Arnside drys out, so we headed off but after 10min Pats throttle cable broke after swapping this over and informing the Coast Guard we got under way 10 min later the second cable snapped leaving Pat stranded, at the same time we were called by the land crew to say we had missed the lock gate opening time unless we could be there in 30 min, with no chance of making this we put Zapcat2 on the tow rope and headed off to Roa Island but heading up wind and into the waves / swell it was really heavy going and i must have swallowed a gallon of sea water Pat was in the front of the boat he was being plastered with braking waves all i could  see was the water braking over his helmet.
