Route: Car - Tom Gill - Tarn Hows - Car

For those of you that are thinking of going onto the hills I would strongly recommend that you read the advice given by the Mountain Rescue organisation of England and Wales. Changes to todays route were made by the minute as we drove to the Lakes today. My first choice had been a section of the Dales Way from between Kendal & Staveley but as we parked up at Ashes Lane the heavens opened so I decided to go to the south end of Windermere. However as I turned off the A591 into Windermere the traffic just ground to an halt. After about 15 minutes without moving I managed to turn around and made my way to Ambleside. I had settled for a visit to Beacon Fell but as we approached the Tom Gill car park at Tarn Hows we decided to settle for a walk there.

The first section of the path up Tom Gill.

The bottom falls.

A glimpse back through the trees to the summit of Wetherlam

Youngsters at Tarn Hows

Looking across The Tarns

The paths are well constructed and suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters

The head of The Tarns

The views from this side are far better.

Wetherlam

Coniston Old Man

Soon we were at the bottom end of The Tarns

Yummy!!

Our return route would take us down the exit road from The Tarns before taking a bridleway back to the car park.

First however we climbed up onto a small knoll to take in the views. Here looking across the Yewdale Fells to Wetherlam

And to Coniston Old Man

The southern crags of Holme Fell with the Langdale Pikes in the distance

Wetherlam as we descend to the car.

Back at the car.

And just a short drive to Coniston for tea and sandwiches at the Bluebird Cafe where the Steam Yacht Gondala looks as magnificent as ever.
