It was a sunny morning when we left home but with a rain forecast later in the day. Hoping that it would at least stay fine we headed up the Lyth Valley to door Whitbarrow by the back door. This route is not as good as those found in A Wainwrights book "The Outlying Fells of Lakeland" but is a lot easier on my knee. Not a good day for photographs, in fact I was in two minds whether to put them on the website at all.
The Lyth Valley Hotel. We parked in a lay-by directly opposite.
Picking blackberries next to the hotel
Our path started right next to the car.
The path climbs steadily passing this property to join a lane at the top. Turn right along the lane and take a path on the left.
The RoW is actually to the left but this fine track is easier to follow
A look back as we gain some height
We are now in an Access Area named Township Allotment with views of Scout Scar across the valley.
Although very dull and overcast Ingleborough was visible to the east.
A view over to Potter Fell and the Shap fells
Just follow the track till it gains the ridge and turns south.
This is the wall shown at the northern extremity of AW's route.
Somewhere down nelow is the tiny Toby Tarn
As we head towards the summit it's easy to see which way the wind predominantly blows from
Lord's Seat cairn, the summit of Whitbarrow.....we are not alone!
We walked past the summit to get this view of Arnside Knott and the Heysham Power Stations.....I'm glad it stayed fine so you can enjoy these fantastic views.
Back to the cairn. My intention had been to return through Horse Pasture Wood but decided to change plans not fancying the combination of wet polished limestone and wet roots.
We returned to the wall and took our outward path for a short distance before bearing right towards Township Plantation
This is a far better descent route and probably more interesting
Entering the plantation.
We descended to what is known as The Howe.
Passing Howe Farm.
Damsons
Plums
Red rosy apples
All available plus more at this roadside stall near The Row
Scout Scar across the valley as we return to the car
Lord's Lot
And finally...A decorated skull which was fixed to a gatepost near the hotel
