" The walk described is the most beautiful in this book ; beautiful it is every step of the way. " ... A Wainwright ...The Outlying Fells of Lakeland
The walk shown below is not the one in AW's book but does take in most of the features of his walk.
After parking the car we walked along the old road towards Raven's Lodge with the crags of White Scar ahead.
Our route would take us round the back of the farm and through the old quarry
Walking through the old quarry. Eventually the path would narrow.
To the left of this seat take a narrow path up the fellside.
A delightful path leads you up to the open ridge
A look back to Arnside Knott across the River Kent
A distant Ingleborough behind the meandering River Kent and Farleton Fell
The summit comes into view
Witherslack Hall in the woods below
The Howgill Fells
Entering the Nature Reserve
There are plenty of windswept trees along the ridge
We had met the couple ahead near to the entrance of the Nature Reserve. They were temporarily misplaced so we gave them directions.
Lord's Seat summit cairn
Edith waits patiently at the start of the path down to Witherslack Hall
The path starts gently over Fodder Allotment giving time to absorb the views
A look south down Morecambe Bay as we approach the start of the steeper descent down the scar.
Chapel Head scar. Normally we walk back to Beck Head through the woods but it was quite warm by now so we decided to stay out in the open even if it did mean a short length of road walking.
A short walk down the road took us to the bridleway to Beck Head.
Where the self-service cafe was still going.
Looking at the entries in the visitors book it as been well received.
Yew Tree Cottage
Beck Head, the beck as been cleaned out since our last visit.
I have no idea what it is but it looks absolutely fantastic.
The pond at Mill Side
Our route back involved a short climb up past the farm at Low Fell end to gain the bridleway back to Raven's Lodge
Keep to the left here or you may be invited in for tea ;-)
Ingleborough through a gap in the trees
And finally ...back to the car
