We arrived at Great Wood car park just before 11am after stopping off at Thirlmere on the way. There was very poor reception on Radio Cumbria, but good enough for us to pay our respects for those who gave and are still giving there lives in war. This walk, my longest in over a year was a simple circuit of Derwent Water and was a delight every step of the way. The forecast had been for a fine & sunny day with cloud filling from the west later in the day and that is just what happened.
From the car park we walked for a short while along the road before dropping down to the waterside. On our way we passed Cat Gill.
The Skiddaw Fells looked magnificent from the shore near Barrow Bay and would remain a feature throughout the walk.
Across Derwent Water to Catbells
A look back to Walla Crag and Falcon Crag from Barrow Bay
No perfect reflections due to the Keswick Launch and other craft but lovely nevertheless.
This is where we have to leave the shore and have a short section through the woods.
Walking through Lowcrag Wood which avoids the busy Barrowdale road.
We emerged at the Lodore Hotel, although you can walk around the back of it, for a short section along the road.
Having left the road to take the path around the head of Derwent Water we first cross Comb Gill.
Catbells ahead as we continue
Reflections in the River Derwent which having drained the Borrowdale Fells now empties its contents into Derwent Water.
Our crossing point.
A look back, mainly to show the boardwalk section which is made of recycled plastic.
Aaaaah.....proper reflections in Great Bay.
Looking down the water and Blencathra is starting to show from behind Walla Crag
Hard to get lost!
A distant Blencathra, Walla Crag and Bleaberry Fell across Great Bay.
Brandlehow Bay
A short stop here.
Just when you think "what a nice reflection"
Entrusting Edith to Entrust (or E E E for short)
Hawse End outdoor centre
Walking from Hawse End to Nichol End
The Skiddaws from Nichol End
Looking towards Keswick and Latrigg
I never noticed the reflections in the cafe window...If I had, I would have taken a bit more care with the picture. If you are in the area don't walk by here. They have the best scones for miles around and they're as big as flagstones.
Edith on the suspension bridge at Portinscale
The River Derwent at Portinscale.
The sun is getting low now, lighting up Latrigg as we walk across the fields to Keswick
Perfection.
The clouds are starting to roll in over the North Western Fells
Keswick is getting its Christmas lights.
Hmmm.....Only 50 days left and 15 walks to my century for the year.
Bit difficult to get a picture here as the light is fading and what light there is is right in front
The Ruskin memorial at Friar's Crag
Almost there as we make our way back towards Great Wood.
The Jaws of Borrowdale
And finally....It's 4pm as we cross the Borrowdale Road to Great Wood.
