I had been to the doctor the previous day and received mixed news. My lungs, as I suspected are getting worse. A recent X-Ray shows that the dark patches showing damage are larger than the X-Ray done in April. However the doctor told me that there was nothing more serious to my calf muscle than a small sprain or tear and that I should keep it moving. but not to overdo it. With a fine spell of weather forecast this at least was good news and so we set off today to do this walk on a fine and glorious day.
Beetham Hall complete with old Pele Tower from where we left the car near Beetham.
The River Bela near Beetham. The steam is coming from the paper mill which dates back over 200 years.
Farleton Fell
The Heron Theatre as we enter the village of Beetham. It occupies the site of a former grammar school built in 1663.
The village stocks. The village is named in the Doomsday Book under the name of Biedun.
The village church, St Michael and All Angels, dates mainly from the 12th Century
Walking up the lane to access the south end of Dallam Park
Looking eastwards as we make are way up.
Must be a popular mid-week spot. This was the second group of walkers we met.
Hazy distant views over Milnthorpe.
As we climbed up towards the old earthwork we got our first view over the Kent estuary to Whibarrow.
The earthworks on Castle Hill.
A splendid if somewhat hazy view to Whitbarrow with the Coniston Fells in the far distance.
Descending towards Milnthorpe.
Down to the River Bela
The Old Bridge at Milnthorpe. Built in 1763 at a cost of £90 to replace an earlier bridge 20 yards upstream. Until 1813 this used to carry the road to Arnside which crossed Dallam Park.
After crossing the bridge we walked into Milnthorpe.
Where, whilst Edith visited the local bakers for two absolutely delicous sausage rolls, I got this picture of the local church, St Thomas' built in 1837.
The Market Cross. From here we returned to the Old Bridge...
..to follow the River Bela downstream a short distance.
Having left the river our return was along the lane running through the park passing Dallam Tower on our way.
A look over to Haverbrack as we make our way back to Beetham.
The Wheatsheaf at Beetham
And finally Farleton Fell as we returned to the car.
