We didn't set off for this walk until around noon. It had been a very dull morning but the weatherman was promising better things for the afternoon. When things began to brighten at home we decided to make the short journey northwards. All the way the brighter weather seemed to be following us until just before Kendal. However thinking that by the time we got on School Knott it would be better we carried on only to be disappointed.

We left the car at the roadside at Cleabarrow and set off along what is part of the Dales Way

The lane is tarmacced at first but soon gives way to normal bridleway. Along this section there are some lovely mossy walls and fine beech hedges.

Desperate for a picture now as views are non existant here are some of the local sheeps backscratchers.

The mist instead of clearing seemed to be getting worse

The still parttly frozen pond which seems to becoming a regular feature.

Just along here is where we turn right, broken signpost on floor. No problems though it is a strong path as shown right.

The path gains height slowly. Just after the first trees the Dales Way will turn off through the wall but our path lays straight on.

A look back at the extensive views....NOT!

A partly frozen School Knott tarn.

We left the tarn to climb up towards School Knott. Looking back over the tarn to Grandsire. The two fells are usually done as one walk but there seemed little point with no views.

Grandsire from School Knott

Windermere from School Knott

Orrest Head from School Knott

Banner Rigg from School Knott

I think that look says "I thought you said it was going to clear and we'd have good views"....that's the polite version anyway!

As we start the descent the mist rolls in over Orrest Head.

A look back as we enter the community woodland

A muddy path brought us back down to the bridleway. The stone says that the first trees were planted here in 2002 to celebrate QEII's 50 years on the throne.

Old Droomer

A fellside beck passes through the wall of the bridleway.

Walking back along the bridleway to our start point

Pinethwaite

A little brightness at last

Back at the car I couldn't even be bothered going down to see if there were any reflections at the private tarn. That was the end of the walk but dear reader with you in mind, and an empty stomach we decided to pay a visit to Bowness on Windermere.

Everything was still very murky down here though.

Swan Lake?

Looking up Windermere didn't reveal too much

Even the gull looked fed up!!.....I was pleased to find that our favourite spot for a cuppa and a bite to eat had reopened after being closed for over 10 weeks to put right the damage done in the Nov '09 floods.

Suitably nourished we returned to the car.

Sorry about the pictures....but not every day is sunny and fine.
