A short walk starting at Pelter Bridge near Rydal. The walk starts with a slight uphill section along the lane towards Steps End. At the end of the lane turn left along a rough rising permissive path to the old Loughrigg quarries. The route then follows the well trodden path of the Loughrigg Terrace always staying on the higher path until it reaches Deerbolts Wood. The route then takes a large zig-zag through the woods to reach the shore of Grasmere near the weir. From here cross the footbridge into Penny Rock Woods and follow the track to the car park at White Moss Common. Cross the road and walk a few yards towards Ambleside before taking a laned footpath past a waterfall to join the Grasmere to Rydal Corpse road. Turn right here and follow the path to Rydal where a visit to the tearoom at Rydal Hall and the Church is optional before walking a short distance down the road towards Ambleside back to Pelter Bridge....If your lucky the Ice Cream van will be there.

Nab Scar over Cote How as we start the walk up the lane.

Rydal Water from the end of the lane. A fine & sunny day but a slight haze

Nab Scar from the permissive path. There was a bit of a breeze so reflections here were out.

Loughrigg Cave.....the outfall from the cave as been partially dammed to raise the water level in an attempt to stop people entering.

Looking over Low Pike to Red Screes

Work is still in progress on the Thirlmere - Manchester aquaduct on the flanks of Nab Scar

Walking along the Loughrigg Terrace with Silver How ahead.

It was noticeable that the path was less stony than normal. The stones are still there but have now been covered with a layer of soil washed down from the fellside probably last November.

A look back

The path splits here but keep left on the higher one.

Grasmere comes into view with the footbridge we will cross shortly below.

A big close up of Helm Crag more popularly known as "The Lion and the Lamb"

Looking over Penny Rock Woods to Seat Sandal

Looking up Grasmere to Dunmail Raise and a distant Lonscale Fell

At the end of the Terrace Route we entered Deerbolts Wood to follow the path on a big zig-zag down to the waterside.

Grasmere was still frozen here

I don't know whether it's been like this this since our last visit in February.

A few reflections in an ice free patch of water.

Having crossed the footbridge we walked through Penny Rock woods towards the car park at White Moss.

After crossing the road we followed this path up towards the Corpse road. I mentioned in February that the path had been washed out. They were still working on it higher up. Not sure that I like it though.

A look back as we make our way to Rydal

We went into the grounds of Rydal Hall for a visit to the tea shop.

Most of the water coming down Rydal Beck was being diverted through the power plant (l). A wander down to the lower bridge for a picture of the lower falls and the grotto. (r)

Rydal Hall.....not a bad looking pile is it?

St Mary's Church Rydal.....we did pop into Dora's Field but not a single daffodil was in flower.

And finally....Back at Pelter Bridge we found this chappie. The boss-lady didn't fancy one but even with a missing filling I enjoyed one.

Next Walk:     9th March 2010 - Lake District - Reston Scar & Hugill Fell from Staveley

Last Walk:     7th March 2010 - Lake District - A Naddle circular from Castlerigg Stone circle
