This was the walk we had intended to do yesterday. Today as we drove along the promenade at Morecambe we could see that Black Combe was clear of cloud although there was some high cloud about. However the forecast was for the day to get better so we made our way to park up at the summit of the Corney Fell road and set off walking around 8:45am. Unfortunately as we made our way to the first summit the weather changed and views to the north into Lakeland were not to good. Whit Fell at 1881' was our highest point of the day and is a great viewpoint on a good day but today the views were not to good.....read on.
We left the car at the top of the Corney Fell road where somebody was enjoying an overnight stay. The little pointed top on the right is Stoneside Hill with Black Combe in the distance. However are route is the other side of the road.
It initially follows the wall seen on the right and is just a steady plod. We last walked these fells in 1993 when we left the car at Silecroft Beach and walked over Black Combe. Then after doing this walk we returned down over Bootle Fell to Bootle and back along the Cumbria Coastal Way which had recently opened to the car. According to my old diary this was around 22 miles and 3800 feet but could have been more or less because measuring walks with a serrated wheel or a piece of strong and counting contour lines was not exactly accurate.
To the left is Kinmont Buck Barrow our last summit of the day. Paddy Great Crag is in the middle with Buckbarrow our first summit to the right.
A view down to the Duddon estuary with the Corney Fell road below us.
We left the wall around here to make our way to Buckbarrow on the right.
As we approached Buckbarrow the views over Plough Fell towards the Conistons was disappointing. However the forecast was for the day to improve.
Kinmont Buck Barrow (l) and Great Paddy Crag (r) as we approach Buckbarrow.
Pick you own way up Buckbarrow but watch for the boulders, some are loose and mossy. After walking over the south end we are passing Wainwrights rock turret here.
The cairned summit at the north end with our next summit, Whit Fell behind.
Gloomy Coniston Fells with The Pike in centre picture below.
Looking back past the rock turret to the southern end with Black Combe in the distance.
A glimpse of the coast with Winscale (Sellafield) to the right.
A look over to Kinmont Buck Barrow.
There are no Lakeland motorways on these fells just narrow trods....I love them! Whit Fell in the distance.
A look back to Plough Fell and Buckbarrow with the Duddon estuary behind.
The cairn and tumulus on Whit Fell.
Behind it the OS Trig Point with poor views of the Conistons. The last time we were here it was a crystal clear day and the views were fantastic.
Looking towards Stainton Pike with Holehouse tarn in front with White Pike and Yoadcastle behind.
And again with Harter Fell and Green Crag.
We hung around for a short time hoping things would improve but to no avail.
We retraced our steps for a short while before taking the track off to the right for our next top, that of Burn Moor.
A look back to Whit Fell.
Looking south from Burn Moor.
The way from Burn Moor to Kinmont Buck Barrow can be easily lost but just head for the wall to its left.
And on arrival at the wall just climb over the fence. It was at this point that the views started clearing.....Sods Law and all that stuff.
Well I'm not going back and I doubt I'll be back up here again so I'll just have to remember how good it was in 1993.
Edith finds a pool to investigate.
Black Combe from Kinmont Buck Barrow
Kinmont Buck Barrow summit cairn
Looking back to Whit Fell and the views are improving all the time.
Passing below Great Paddy Crag as we start our descent.
Another delightful narrow trod.
Kinmont Buck Barrow
Our return path brings us down to the road on the other side of the wall.
Looking towards Scafell from the Corney Fell road.
And to the Coniston fells.
Looking down the Corney Fell road to the Duddon estuary.
Blue skies over Whit Fell
It's too bad a view from here!!
We stopped off at the old Duddon Iron Furnace on the way back. Well worth a visit if passing.
Great Burney another OFL from the A5092
And finally.....The Conistons from near the old school at Lowick.
