We set off for the Dales once the early morning traffic through Lancaster had cleared and were soon parked up on the road to Feizor. Our route would take us from the car along a walled lane first towards Austwick but then turning NE'ly towards Jop Ridding. Just past Jop Ridding there was a short climb up through the fields next to Wharfe Wood and then onwards to Smearsett Scar. From here we made our way down to Feizor and the cafe before a short walk back to the car.

Route Map

As we drove over Newby Moor between High Bentham and Clapham I just had to stop for the views of Gragareth and Whernside.

Not forgetting Ingleborough.

The car was more abandoned than parked not far from Feizor.

From the car we took a walled lane towards Austwick with views of the Bowland moors to our south.

Behind abd to the east of us are Pot Scar and in the distance Smearsett Scar which we will visit later.

The first section of the lane doesn't look to be walked that regularly. It was quite overgrown but no problems.

There were plenty of wild fruits to enjoy along the way.

This is shown on the map as Meldings Barn and a more travelled path from Feizor joins ours here making the walking easier.

We carry on ahead with Norber of erratics fame ahead.

Robin Procter's Scar and Nappa Scar at Norber ahead with Austwick just visible to the left.

Our route carried on below the woods. There is an option of taking paths through the woods which we have done before but today we decided to stay in the open.

Our route carries on towards Jop Ridding with Moughton Scars ahead.

We have just passed Jop Ridding here and shortly we will take a path climbing up through the fields on our right.

We had left the path at the stile in the distance and we are now making our way through a series of fields to reach the bridleway from Feizor.

As we gain some height the views towards Ingleborough open up.

Now at the bridleway and Pen y ghent peeps round the corner of Moughton Nab.

We left the bridleway to walk along the path towards Hargreaves Barn for this view of Pen y ghent.  It was here that I had a change of plan and decided to include Smearsett Scar in the walk.

Looking back to Ingleborough.

And ahead to Smearsett.

Smearsett Scar summit with Pen y ghent and Fountains Fell.

And with Ingleborough.

Looking over Ribblesdale towards Fountains Fell.

A look over Happy valley towards the Celtic Wall.

A look along the ridge to Pot Scar. This would normally be our return route to the bridleway but with knee trouble I gave it a miss today....

...preferring the more grassy route down the valley

Pen y ghent

Our path took us back to the bridleway which we descended to Feizor.

Looking down on Feizor.

Delightful limestone cottages.

A stop at Elaine's tea-rooms which seems to be getting busier each time we come.

And finally....all that remained was a short walk down the road to the car.
