We had an appointment to keep in mid morning at Grange over Sands which fortunately didn't last as long as we expected. When we finished we drove up the Cartmel road to park up near the lane to Spring Bank. There was a cool NE breeze blowing so rather than walking into it with the sun behind it we decided to do the walk anti-clockwise so that we would be mainly sheltered from the breeze as we headed northwards and our return along the ridge top would be into the sun with the breeze behind us.

A wee bit gloomy as we set off but hopefully it will clear.

A little brighter as we pass Spring Bank.

Doing the walk this way round will keep us out of the breeze most of the way.

High Farm.

A look back to High Farm.

Our path then followed along the top of Eggerslack Wood until we reached this  waymarker.

At the waymarker a path sneaks off up the fellside. There are a couple of shortcuts heading directly to the summit but I want to follow this path for a while yet.

The path is the bridleway that passes over Hampsfell to descend to Longlands and as we gain height views to the Howgills and the western Dales open up.

Looking over Eggerslack Wood and the Kent estuary to Arnside Knott and Ingleborough.

The broad track swings to the northwest and heads towards a wall.

At the wall we pass through a gate and for a short section through limestone outcrops the path is again waymarked.

We are approaching the highest point of the path now and meet a group of pony trekkers. In a short distance we will turn southwards to head for the summit.

As we reach the top of the track this big fella passed overhead.

Looking towards Newton Fell with Lakeland behind.

Coniston and Langdale Fells. The views were changing in seconds as the clouds passed over in the fresh breeze.

Black Combe peeks over Lowick High Common.

Looking down on Cartmel and across Cartmel sands to the Furness peninsula.

Dow Crag and Coniston Old Man with St Peter's Church at Field Broughton in the sun.

Hampsfell summit hospice.

The return walk along the ridge was very pleasant with the breeze behind us and the sun in our faces.

A look back.

Across the Kent estuary to Sandside with Middleton Fell behind.

Fell End ahead.

Cairn at Fell End

And finally.....walking back down to the car.
