What a fabulous day! We had some doubts about the weather as we drove along the promenade at Morecambe. Although it was wall to wall blue skies the views over the bay to the Lakes was somewhat hazy. However as we drove past the Low Wood Hotel near Ambleside the views up Langdale were beautiful and not long after that we were parked up at Elterwater and walking. It is a walk we have done a number of times although we put a figure of eight in the route at Oak Howe. On our return to Elterwater we couldn't resist having a short walk down to Elter Water itself.
Route Map
The Elterwater Maple is wearing its autumnal coat.
Looking over to Meg's Gill as we walk up to the quarry.
Langdale Pikes close-up from the quarry.
From the quarry we walked up to join the track to Baysbrown
Our path continues through the farmyard.
The Oak Howe Needle
The path drops down to Oak Howe.
There's a choice here. Normally we go left along the track of the Cumbria Way to Side House but today we will cross the beck and follow the valley bottom and return via Side House.
Oak Howe cottage.
The Pikes from the footbridge over Great Langdale Beck.
Looking up Langdale and the lane we will follow to the New Dungeon Ghyll.
Words cannot describe the feeling.
The Crinkle Crags and Bowfell
The New Dungeon Ghyll
The Sticklebarn for a shandy and crisps.
From the Sticklebarn we walked across the car park and road to take the path to Side House.
Side House with Side Pike towering above.
A look back as we head back to Oak Howe along the Cumbria Way.
Perfect, just perfect!
Looking across the valley to the route of Blea Rigg 8 , an interesting route but not the best scenic one.
Making our way down the valley to Oak Howe.
It is difficult not to look back.
This place looks familiar.....Oak Howe revisited.....from here we followed Great Langdale Beck back towards Chapel Stile.
New Bridge, Chapel Stile.
Chapel Stile from near Thrang Farm.
Small falls in Great Langdale Beck as we make our way back to Elterwater.
Elterwater Bridge. After leaving the rucsacs in the car and changing boots for trainers we walked down to Elter Water.
Loughrigg on the way back
And finally ....back to Elterwater.
