It hadn't been my intention to go walking today as we had the No.2 granddaughter (Sophie) to sleep the previous evening. However a change of plans saw me with a window of opportunity between midday and 4pm so as it was a lovely day I set off for Crag Foot for this walk. Unfortunately on the short drive from home the weather changed and I started under a rather dark band of clouds. With the breeze however it didn't last too long.

Route Map

Having parked up near Crag Foot I walked down to the embankment to go to Jenny Brown's Point

There's a lot of high cloud about as I look over one of the RSPB's pools towards Clough Pike.

The OS map shows the path crossing the fields to the left but it now follows the embankment.

There's a bit more brightness to my north over Farleton Fell

The old smelting chimney near Jenny Brown's Point

Brown's Houses......well that's what the map says!

I've always called this an old quarry.....never 100% sure though.

The sands of Morecambe Bay. They have raised £1000's for various charities by folk walking across the bay with a guide. But the tragedy of February 2004 was recently brought back to mind when a skull was found in a gully by one of the guides. Various tests identified it as that of one of the two still missing.

As I walk across the area known as Jack Scout there are some walkers on the beach below me.

A full 18x Zoom on the camera shows some of the fisherman, probably from Flookburgh that fish the channels for shrimps. These are on there way back home.

A glimpse of Lindeth Tower as the sun comes out. Elizabeth Gaskell, the prominent Victorian author and wife of a Unitarian minister in Manchester frequently visited Silverdale to escape the city. At that time Lindeth Tower was a summer house adjoining the farm where she stayed with her daughters, and several of her novels were written here.

A brighter picture as I look over to a distant Black Combe from Gibraltar Farm.

A few yards down the road took me to the lane leading to the pond at Woodwell.

A walk through the delightfully named Bottoms Wood led me to....

.....the equally delightful Woodwell Cottage.....

.....The lane continues straight to emerge onto the main road at Silverdale from where I took the path across The Lots towards The Cove.

The path across The Lots towards The Cove with Grange and Hampsfell over the estuary.

Looking down the coast to the Outlying Fell of Humphrey Head.

A look down the other side of the bay towards home.

This area used to be beautiful salt marsh reaching out well over 100 yards from the shore. Not a blade of grass left now.

Looking down into The Cove complete with cave (actually an old working)

From The Cove I walked up the lane to make my way back towards Silverdale.

The sun was catching the trees in Eaves Wood above Elmslack bringing out the colours.

St John Church, Silverdale. I walked through the grounds to pick up my path across the fields.

Looking over to Eaves Wood

Ahead to Farleton Fell

Country sights and smells ad the farmer goes about his work. Shortly after this I took a path to the right to Silverdale Green

Bottoms Farm

Crinkle Cottage, 1552 at Silverdale Green.

From Silverdale Green I had a short road-walk before taking the path through Fleagarth Wood back to the embankment.

Lots of water sculpted limestone to view on the way.

Looking over to Warton Crag as I leave the woods

Wind-swept tree on the embankment.

And finally....a look over to Crag Foot as I return to the car.
