With a good forecast for the day we had hoped to visit the Lakes today. However I was due a refrigerated delivery of my Anti-TNF pre-filled syringes for my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I receive a delivery every 8 weeks and it normally arrives around 8am. Today however there was no sign of the courier so around 8:30am I phoned up the company to see if they could give me an approximate time which they said would would between 9am and noon. At this point I took myself off for a short walk along the coastal path leaving Edith to wait for the delivery. When I got back the delivery had been made but now there was another decision to me made, where to go. My walk along the coastal path had been made in dull, dour conditions and without a glimpse of Lakeland across the bay. However around 11am the day did brighten and we set off for our favourite "local" stamping ground.

Route Map.....There is plenty of parking spaces at Arnside on the promenade and all free. There is also a car parking area on the shore near the railway viaduct but if you decide to use this please check the time and height of the tides.

We arrived at Arnside in bright sunshine but with some misty clouds about. Having parked up near the viaduct we set off to follow the river down to New Barns.

There was a lot of this low cloud about, so much so it was obscuring views towards Lakeland. Hopefully it will clear as we make our way down-river.

Our route will just follow the river down to where the land sticks out on the left.

"Reflections in a still river".....The viaduct will be shut to traffic for repairs for a few months starting around March/April. Hopefully money will be found to fund the provision of a walkway across it.

Big skies over Whitbarrow.

We have now arrived at New Barns Bay and have the sun for company once again.

Looking over to the caravan site at New Barns. Our path is to the left of the picture.

This is our route....now the climbing begins.

A rather muddy and in places slippy path up through Copridding Wood.

A look towards the summit from a clearing in the woods.

Looking across the estuary to Grange and Hampsfell.

A couple of welcome seats....I was gasping by this time.

And now the mist that had always been threatening decides to roll in. A bit different to the view back in early November when it looked like below.

Oh well, never mind it can clear as quickly as it arrived......he thinks hopefully.

It was a little better by the time we reached the viewpoint but nowt to write home about.

Just the faintest of views of the Coniston Fells over Newton Fell.

But Whitbarrow only a mile or two away is barely visible.

Walking to the summit

Summit pictures are delayed whilst Dr Doolittle rescues a spider or some other insect from the water on top of the Trig point.

There didn't seem much point in hanging around so we descended down RedHills

Dr Doolittle greets an old friend. It's either Nicky or Bracken, take your pick.

Bad hair day on Arnside Knott.

Red Hills

Leaving Red Hills to walk back down to the shore.

Arnside YHA....the path down to the beach is on the left.

Barry's Cafe ....re-opens 2nd February 2011

Back on the shore and just a short walk back....

....to the promenade and car.
