The weatherman had promised a fine and sunny day today yet when we awoke it was to a overcast and misty morning. A check of the Lake District webcams and some communication to Facebook friends showed that all of Lakeland was similar. Regular checks of the webcams continued and around 9:30 there was some sun showing on the Derwentwater Marina webcam. The car was quickly loaded and we made our way up the M6 and then through the Lakes to Great Wood in Borrowdale from where our walk commenced at 11:15am. A full circuit of the Lakes was never in my plans just a combined walk and sail which now follows.

Having parked the car at the NT car park in Great Wood we made our way to the lakeside. The water level was quite high so we used the road for a while and here we are passing Cat Gill.

Now down on the shore at the Ashness landing it is still rather gloomy but there are signs of it brightening.

A look northwards to the Skiddaw fells.

Looking over to Catbells from Barrow Bay.

A local occupant of the lake comes to investigate.

A right place, right moment time as a glimpse of sunshine lights up the trees along the lakeside.

The start of the concessionary path at Barrow Bay was under water but we managed to avoid the worst parts and got this view of Walla Crag and Falcon Crag.

Although not perfectly flat the lake surface was calm enough to reflect some wonderful colours on its surface.

Our way ahead looking into the Jaws of Borrowdale.

Directly across Derwentwater to Catbells with no doubt a number of walkers on it.

Yup!!!....there they are.

Maiden Moor

A last look back as we leave the shore to take the path through the woods towards the Lodore Hotel.

We emerged from the woods near the hotel.

Lodore Hotel.

We walked a short distance along the road to pick up the path across the head of the lake. It was too deep for Ediths boots but my size 10's were high enough to paddle across carefully. This did not alter our plans as it had been our intention to turn around here and walk back to the Lodore landing to get the boat to Keswick.

With water lapping away just below the top of my boots a view across Cannon Dub towards the cloud topped Skiddaws.

The footbridge over the Derwent

Catbells as I carefully made my way back to Edith.

We made our way back to the Lodore Landing passing some members of the local Rainbow Club enjoying a spot of lunch.

By luck, a check of the timetable showed we had only just over 5 minutes to wait for the boat.

A quiet corner gives a few reflections.

Only a couple of minutes late here it comes, just as the cloud starts to clear away off the Skiddaws.

A close up of Blencathra taken through the glass windows of the launch.

We disembarked at Keswick and made our way to Crow Park.

Latrigg and Blease Fell from Crow Park

Colourful Skiddaws

From Crow Park we made our way back past the landing stages towards Friar's Crag.

A broody looking Jaws of Borrowdale from Friars Crag.

And again fro Strandshag Bay as we make our way back to the car.

A spotlight on Catbells

And finally......back to the car with Walla Crag towering above.
