It's a Sunday, the first weekend of the Easter Holidays and an absolutely cracking day. Being stuck in the central Lakes traffic is not my idea of fun and in past days we would have been heading towards Shap but nowadays something easier is needed. My recent problem with "wind" is now just a rumbly stomach so I was confident of doing a little bit more today. Mention the name Yewbarrow to a Lakeland walker and immediately thoughts are of Wasdale, the Great Door and Stirrup Crag. This Yewbarrow however holds nothing more dramatic than a view across to Chapel Head Scar on Whitbarrow.

Whitbarrow from where we left the car.

The entrance to the Latterbarrow Nature Reserve.

10th April and our first cowslips of 2011

A gentle climb takes us through the Nature Reserve....

.....and the woods of Longrove End....

.....with views across to Newton Fell

Eventually we arrived at the delightful High Fell End.

The Damson trees are full of blossom.

From a High Fell End we walked along the road a short way before taking a track off on the right.

The path through the woods is almost a mile in length but the climbing is gentle.

Towards the end of the path there is some coppicing going on.

At a gate the path leaves the woods to carry on towards Witherslack Hall.

We however will turn left and upwards onto the ridge of Yewbarrow.

Ahead of us a hazy view of Eastern & Far Eastern fells.

To our right a distant Ingleborough.

Above us a pair of buzzards, but I could only get one in the camera.

Looking over to Lords's Seat on Whitbarrow.

A glimpse of Gummer's How over Cartmel Fell.

The faint outline of the Helvellyn & Fairfield Fells.

Primrose

We dropped down from the ridge to pick up our original path.

Lawn's House

Looking over Witherslack Hall Farm to Whitbarrow Scar.

Chapel Head Scar as we take the path through High & Low Crag Woods to Beck Haed

A wider view

The path through the woods

Lots of primroses in the woods

The old barn at Beck Head which houses the.....

....Hiker's Rest Cafe.....serve yourself and pop the money in an envelope (supplied) and post it next door. It opened in April 2009 and deserves supporting, so please if your passing pop in and enjoy.

The cottage next door is the pay-desk and where one of Edith's uncles and cousin used to live.

A little way down the lane....the beautiful Beck Head.

The pond at Mill Side

A look back as we follow the quiet lane to Town End

Hedgerow Bluebells

A look back to Town End which we have just walked through.

Looking over to High Fell End which we visited earlier.

And finally....The Derby Arms and nearly back to the car.

Next Walk:      11th April 2011 - Lake District - Scout Scar from the Brigsteer Road.

Last Walk:       8th April 2011 - Lake District - A visit to High Dam
