It was a bad news - good news day for Edith today. This walk was planned so that we could pick up our old friend "Jess" from the bungalow but when we got there, there was no sign off her. We went round the back and found her owner Roger who told us that Jess was staying with friends as he had only returned from a short break the previous night......bad news!!!! However he went on to tell us that she was expected puppies in a week or so and that if we contacted him and were passing by we could call in to see them.....good news!!!
Route Map
Reston Scar from our parking spot.
These la'al chappies hadn't woken up properly yet.
Cute!
Just a trickle of water coming over the weir at Barley Bridge.
Looking over to Brunt Knott.
The Bungalow.
I thought it rather unusual that the gate was open....it transpired that Roger had arrived home late the previous evening and knowing he would have to go for Jess in the morning had left it that way.
Initial disappointment that Jess wasn't here was soon put aside with the news that she was having pups soon.
After a chat with Roger we made our way up the fell side.
Another glorious Lakeland day with views to Brunt Knott.
It seemed a bit of a slog for me this morning but eventually we arrived at the wall corner.
The views were well worth the effort.
But then another disappointment. The cairn on the Wainwright summit had disappeared. The remains lay below to the left. What mindless fool could do something like this?
Looking over Elf Howe to Brunt Knott
And over Millrigg Knott to my beloved Kentmere.
The wider view.
From the Wainwright top we made our way to the northern top where the cairn was intact.
Looking to Sour Howes and Sallows with Red Screes just visible in between.
Glorious perfection.
We are now on the "true" summit which would have meant a trespass for AW. Nowadays this is access land and freely available to all.
The Coniston Fells over Banner Rigg.
Bowfell and the Langdales above Lingmoor.
A look back as we make our way through the new plantation.
Reston Scar summit cairn.
The view northwards.
Looking over to Brunt Knott.
A visit to Kemp Tarn on our descent.
Descending to Staveley.
Craggy Wood ahead with Potter Fell behind.
And finally......back to the car......Well not quite finally
On the 5th May 2011 we were having a day free of walking and had to visit Kendal. This seemed an opportune time to catch up with events at Staveley so we phoned Roger up to see if it was OK to visit. Below are a few pictures from the visit.
Roger, her owner, as told us on a number of occasions that Jess rarely goes down the drive but once again as soon as she heard Ediths voice she bounded down the slope to give a big wet welcome.
Once we had convinced Jess we were NOT going on the fell we went around to the back of the bungalow to find Roger. Jess knows that Edith always as something tasty in her bag and puts on the charm.
Roger showed me the recent arrivals which were in a box in the back porch cuddled up close. There are six of them, five dogs and one bitch and they are 17 days old.
Jess in the meantime was enjoying a pigs ear......
.....leaving Edith free to meet the pups.
While we were having a brew outside Roger brought the pups out.....
...to squirt a bit of pink fluid down them to worm them. Edith was in charge of keeping the "done" and "not done" groups apart. Jess meanwhile was wondering if there was owt else in the bag.
A contented Mum.....All pups apart from one, all have got homes and there is interest in the last one.
