An easy mostly level walk with just the one short climb around the Crooklands area of South Cumbria. Just the job for a warm sunny day.

Route Map

We left the car in a lay-by near the canal on the A65 and made our way down to the canal.

It was only a short stretch before we had to leave the canal where it was culverted under the M6 to walk under the motorway and rejoin it on the other side.

It's a glorious morning and already quite warm.

Whilst he sails up and down...

.....his partner tends to the nest.

Cowslips along the canal bank.

This section of the canal is no-navigable to most boats however this one belonging to the Lancaster Canal Trust is the exception.

The Canal Trust building.

The Waterwitch

Wakefield's Wharf.....built in the 19th Century to serve a gunpowder factory nearby.

Cooling off.

A small tortoiseshell butterfly.

Curious locals.

Field End

We left the canal here to take a narrow lane up to High Commonmire

An hazy zoom in on The Helm as we walked up the lane.

An equally hazy Whitbarrow from near Low Commonmire

Low Commonmire

A hazy view to The Helm and Benson Knott from the highest part of the walk.

Passing Deer Park.

Descending now with Farleton Knott ahead.

We left the narrow lane here to make our way back to the canal.

The old bus is still here at the farm.

Despite Ediths best efforts they wouldn't come over.

.

A big zoom was needed.

From the farm we took the field paths back to the canal.

The church on St Gregory's Hill as we left the canal.

And finally......A Diet Bacon Buttie!
