---------------------------------------------------------------

It as been 5 days since I last had a walk due in some part to the weather but mainly because I have been feeling under the weather. My stomach problem still persists but seems to be slowly improving. Edith was at her brothers for the day and the forecast was for a fine but cloudy day so around 10am I decided to set off for a walk in the Silverdale area. As usual I ended up on Arnside Knott but that is no problem, I could gladly go there every day and see it in a different way but I'm sure dear reader you would soon become bored. I have varied my route a little but most will be familiar to you.

Route Map

I left the car in the car park at Eaves Wood. Over many years of walking we have left the car in many weird and wonderful places but this is the only place that I have had an attempted break-in and it as happened twice! Fortunately in both cases the break-in appeared to have been done by amateurs sticking a screwdriver or similar into the door lock and in both cases were unsuccessful. Our son fortunately is a Auto-Locksmith and a visit to the local scrap yard and some re-keying meant that repairs were very cheap

I left the car park to enter the woods but after only a few yards I took a path off to the right which would take me to Waterslack.

On arrival at Waterslack turn left along the lane towards the now closed garden centre and just before reaching it take a path on the right which leads to a rail crossing and onto the lane to Far Waterslack.

A very pleasant residence as I walk down the lane to Far Waterslack.

I walked down the lane towards the farm at Far Waterslack. The lane also used to service the now disused Middlebarrow Quarry which I will come to soon.

A glimpse of Whitbarrow ahead as I approach Silverdale Moss.

Silverdale Moss....Reedbeds for Bitterns.

Back across the railway lines to have a look in the now disused Middlebarrow Quarry.

It as been closed a few years now although the operators did want to taken even more out of the hillside but were fortunately refused.

A turn left as I left the quarry took me as far as the signpost from where a right turn....

...took me out into the fields near Arnside Tower Farm with a view across to the Knott.

A look back to the tower and farm.

After crossing a couple of fields cross the farm lane to take a path....

....alongside the railway line to Black Dyke.

After passing through Black Dyke I took the signposted path up to the Silverdale Road.

I followed the path upwards until it ended at a small estate the way through which was waymarked to the Silverdale Road. At the road a left turn....

....and a few strides brought me to this gate and path through Red Hills Wood.

A fairly level path soon took me through the woods to exit onto...

.....a private road with residencies way beyond my meagre means.

After an hop, skip & jump along the road I left it to take the path up through Red Hills Wood....

.....to exit onto Red Hills which regular readers will be familiar with. All that is left now is the plod up to the top.

Fortunately there were plenty of excuses to stop on the way up

It wasn't the brightest of days but the views were quite good and far reaching.

Eventually I arrived at the summit trig point from where I dropped down....

To the viewpoint. I seem to have been up here quite a bit lately.....and each time a donation is made. These places, despite what a number of folk think don't look after themselves.

Over Heathwaite to Humphrey Head.

Over New Barns to Grange and Hampsfell

Distant Conistons

As I was descending from the viewpoint I was working my return route options out. I don't bother with the map around here but I know the shortest route is down to Arnside Tower Farm and either back via Middlebarrow or the Pepper Pot. I decide however to go down Heaththwaite and to Silverdale which is a bit further but there is a feeding station along the route.

Looking over Hollins Farm from Heathwaite.

The goats and kids are back in the field now....

.....as the building work on the toilets/showers at the farm progresses.

From Far Arnside a short walk across the fields...

...took me to Holgates Caravan Park & Campsite with its splendid cafe where I enjoyed a nice brew and a lovely scone.

From the caravan park there was a short section of road walking before I took....

....the path across the the fields to The Row.

The Row

I have long admired this fine dwelling on The Row. It would need me to win the National Lottery to afford it however and since I do not do it, I can't see me moving in just yet.

And finally....leaving The Row to cross the road back into the car park.

Next Walk:      27th May 2011 - Lake District - Along Scout Scar from Helsington Church.

Last Walk:       20th May 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale - An afternoon on Arnside Knott
