I hadn't planned on any walking today, just intending to do some catching up with the website. However we woke to a rather nice morning and the weatherman wasn't predicting a band of rain approaching from the south-west to arrive until after noon. Edith had the choice and picked this walk as once again less travelling meant we were walking for around 8:30am. The walk was timed perfectly as we kept the sun for most of it and just had high white cloud for the last leg. The predicted rain arrived shortly after we returned home.

Route Map

Looking over part of Silverdale Golf course as we make our way to Leighton Moss

A look over to the southern end of Leighton Moss with Warton crag behind

The causeway across the moss.

Leighton Moss from the public hide. Once again to me there's nowt but gulls but looking at the RSPB records there are many sightings of different species....Note to self.....bring binoculars!!

My favourite spot for photography.

As it was quite early and there was nobody about we decided to visit one of the hides at the top of the moss to see what was going on. A permit is normally needed for this hide. On our way we saw lots of orchids.

Having arrived at the hide in great anticipation we got the same result.....nowt!

The views however were quite nice.

We met this la'al chappie as we made our way over to Grisedale Farm.

After passing Grisedale Farm we followed the track towards Leighton Hall.

A look back towards Arnside Knott (l) with Coniston Old Man in the far distance.

Say Cheeseeee!

Just before reaching Leighton Hall we took a path on the left across the fields to Yealand Storrs.

Looking over freshly cut field towards Grisedale Farm.

Dr Doolittle had plenty to occupy her on the way but most remained totally disinterested.

Passing Brow Foot Farm.

We left the field paths by this cottage with the road ahead.

A left turn and a few short yards and we were off road again...

....as we walked through the Yealand Hall Allotment.

After a while we left the path to walk down through the fields towards Hawes Water. I was a wee bit disappointed here as I was expecting to see more colour in the field....

....However as we passed through the wall stile into the Gait Barrows Nature Reserve things altered.

It was a delight to walk down through them.

The path enters a narrow wooded area alongside Hawes Water

A look across towards Challan Hall

The plan was to return through Trowbarrow so we set off down the lane towards the entrance.

Soon after entering you pass the site of the old Limeworks where there used to be a Hoffman Kiln. Nowadays all as gone apart from a few foundation stones.

A short walk took us to the old quarry now a nature reserve.

The blue skies of earlier were fast disappearing as we walked up and down the old quarry..

.....so a return was made through the woods....

.....to the cafe at the RSPB Centre at Leighton Moss.

Next Walk:      14th June 2011 - Lake District - Potter Fell and Tarn.

Last Walk:       11th June 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - A magical morning on the Knott
