I had an appointment at my doctors at 08:15 for my monthly blood-testing and the plan was to get that done and then to carry on to the Lakes from there. However once again the great British weather threw a spanner in the works with a dull and wet start to the day. It was therefore around 10:30 when we eventually set off and after finding a parking spot at Elterwater we did this short but pleasant walk. The weather stayed fine with lots of sun and some very good views.

Route Map

It was fairly busy by the time we arrived with most of my favourite parking spots gone. However I just managed to squeeze into the last space on the road into the village before the controlled area starts.

The Brittania

Elterwater Bridge over Great Langdale Beck.

The work being carried out by United Utilities is still in progress. The "temporary" National Trust car park can be seen behind it and looks full.

A look back as we make our way down to Elter Water.

A fairly low beck.

Loughrigg

A short walk through the woods and...

....we arrive at Elter water

Lingmoor and the Pikes stand proud over Elter Water.

Lingmoor

Close up Pikes.

Leaving Elter Water we followed the River Brathay down to Skelwith Bridge here with a view to Wetherlam

The recently "new" bridge built so walkers going to Colwith Force didn't have to walk along the busy road near Skelwith Bridge.

Chesters........"did I arrange an overdraft?"..."No"...."Forget it then"

Sadly I believe these are now all holiday cottages.

Skelwith Bridge

Skelwith Bridge Hotel.....sadly a bit soon for a visit to The Talbot Bar.

From Skelwith Bridge it was a short but steepish walk up the lane to Tarn Foot....

.....to take the lane...

....past Loughrigg Tarn.

It is a beautiful viewpoint and popular with the professional  photographers. I'm not sure if the guy below us was one but we stopped a while here to have our "butties" and he never moved.

Anyway for now you'll have to manage with my amateur efforts.

Edith meanwhile takes five.

The view, although the same was constantly changing as the clouds passed by on the breeze.

Foxy Foxgloves

Refreshed, we carried on along the lane....

....looking down on Oaks.

We walked past our return route to have a short walk along the Loughrigg Terrace.

Nab Scar ahead with a distant Red Screes.

Seat Sandal, Stone Arthur, Great Rigg, Heron Pike and The Nab.

Silver How and Easedale Fells.

Not bad!!....well worth coming for.

Walking back through the woods on our way to High Close.

High Close YHA

From High Close it was just a case of walking back down to Elterwater on the many paths avoiding the road.

And finally.....back to the car.

Next Walk:      18th June 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - An afternoon on the Knott

Last Walk:      14th June 2011 - Lake District - Potter Fell & Tarn.
