We hadn't actually planned on having a walk today after yesterdays warm and slightly longer walk but it was a glorious morning and the forecast for the rest of the week wasn't too brilliant so we decided to give it a go. It was Edith's choice so if Arnside ain't your cuppa tea blame her. Of course there was an ulterior motive which will become apparent towards the end.

Route Map

Did I say it was a gorgeous morning?

There's no better place on a morning like this as far as I am concerned.

I keep meaning to see if there are any old pictures of this wooden jetty on the internet. If anybody knows, let me know please.

Hampsfell across the estuary.

Ashmeadow House

A big zoom caught this family outing paddling up the river.....Dad must be at work.

Whitbarrow with an hazy Kirkstone Pass to the left.

Approaching New Barns.

The last time we were hear there were Herons all over the place. Today we only saw this one.

The sea pinks are losing there colour now.

With no reason to rush we decided to go to the "Bob In" cafe at New Barns.

Suitably refreshed we made our way to the track up the Knott through Copridding Wood.

It was a bit cooler in the shade of the trees.

There were lots of these about.....I'm no expert on flutterbys but I think it's a Dark Green Fritillary.

A view down the bay to home....

....and over Heathwaite to Kent's Bank and the Furness Peninsula.

The path to the viewpoint.

Humphrey Head over Heathwaite.

Over New Barns to Grange and Hampsfell.

The Conistons over Newton Fell.

Heaven is......a day like today!!

Summit seat.

Eastern & Far Eastern fells over Whitbarrow from Red Hills

Looking up the River Kent

Now where are those calves?

Here's a couple sheltering from the sun...

and here's another....

Dr Doolittle as brought some chopped up apple......will it work?

There's some initial interest....

" What is it?"...."no idea, it doesn't smell of much"....." are ya gonna try it?"

Partial Success!!!.....I'm not sure they were that keen.....I think some cake from the cafe might have been appreciated more.

We took the lane past Yew Tree Cottage down to the shore.

Which left us a pleasant walk back to Arnside.....We didn't stop at the "Beach Walk Cafe", I had other things in mind.

The Albion?.....very nice, but not today.

That's better!! ....a large Borrowdale Blackberry Ice Cream for yours truly and a more modest Mint for Edith....

.....eaten on the Pier with lovely views down the estuary.

Next Walk:      7th July 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale - A South Silverdale saunter.

Last Walk:       3rd July 2011 - Yorkshire Dales - Along the Turbary Road & Kingsdale
