It was the weekend of the Windermere Air Show and my original intention was to find a spot to watch it from. However as usual I was too impatient to be off and was there far too early. After completing this walk I decided to return from to watch the penultimate and deciding stage of the Tour de France which I had been following for the last 19 days.
Route Map
It was an absolutely glorious morning as I drove along the promenade at Morecambe. I stopped at Scalestones Point for a picture of the Coniston Fells. In the channel below me can be seen one of the bank or stake nets used mainly to catch flounders and plaice.
Looking down and across the bay towards Barrow.
I left the car at the junction of the Crook Road and B.O.A.T to Cleabarrow and beyond and walked back along the Crook Road a few yards to take the lane towards Outrun Nook. As I set off along the lane I just caught a glimpse of Red Screes.
I left the lane for a moment or two to walk down to Cleabarrow Tarn for a few reflections.
The lane to Outrun Nook.....never saw a vehicle of any kind.
Outrun Nook below me.
Outrun Nook and now my route is along that of the Dales Way for a while.
I left the lane at the entrance to Hagg End Farm....
.....where my route took me between the farmhouse and Troffers Tea-Room which was only just opening.
The first section of the path after leaving the farm is rather unspectacular but....
...before too long the views start appearing......sadly so do the clouds, where have the blue skies of home gone!
I'm now at the highest point of this section of the path. Before me is School Knott. Today I intend to visit it's neighbour Grandsire first so....
.....I turn right and follow the broken wall on its left until....
....I reach the cross wall with stile.
Fear not if you miss it, there's a gate below.
A short walk along the rising ridge soon as me...
....at the summit cairn on Grandsire with views towards Kentmere....
....and the Howgills.
There's even a view to home!
Looking over to School Knott.
And to Orrest Head with Wansfell behind.
To Reston Scar and Brunt Knott
I walked back from the cairn a short way then headed for School Knott picking up a narrow track on the way down.
School Knott Tarn comes into view.
School Knott Tarn
Bogbean, sometimes called the Bog Hop.......It has had many traditional uses including its leaves being used as a substitute for hops in beer, the rhizome being powdered and used in bread making and parts of the plant being used as a cure for arthritis. The plant also contains a chemical compound which attracts cats.
A nice gentle walk up to the summit of School Knott...
....gave views across to Brant Fell...
....and over Windermere and Claife Heights to the Coniston Fells.
A view over Windermere to the fells of Langdale.
Over Orrest Head and Wansfell to Red Screes and the Fairfield Fells.
Looking over Banner Rigg to Sour Howes and Sallows
Reston Scar with Brunt Knott beyond.
A last look before I decided to call it a day and go home for Le Tour.
School Knott Tarn as I pass by.
Back on the lane and almost back to the car.
