A walk today starting at Elterwater from where I walked up past the quarry to join the track to Baysbrown and then to Oak Howe. From Oak Howe I followed the track of the Cumbria Way to Side House and then to the Sticklebarn and New Dungeon Ghyll. My return was along the Old Langdale road and the the Cumbria Way to Chapel Stile and then to Elterwater.

Route Map

Passing the cottages with Wetherlam behind as I walk down into Elterwater

Great Langdale Beck from Elterwater Bridge

Megs Gill as I walk up to the quarry.

The Langdale Pikes from the quarry.

Walking through Baysbrown Wood.

Looking over to Chapel Stile and Thrang Crag as I leave the woods.

Walking down to Baysbrown farm

Looking across the valley to Chapel Stile.

Baysbrown.

Walking from Baysbrown to Oak Howe.

A left turn at the barn onto the Cumbria Way.

And within moments the answer to the question "Why do you go walking so much?"

The Pikes dominate the views at this point....

....but as I make my way along the path other delights come into view. The Crinkle Crags and Bowfell...

....but my eyes are still drawn across the valley.

Above me Side Pike stands proudly with Pike O'Blisco and Great Knott further back.

It was no hardship to find a convenient rock to plonk myself down on and just sit & admire.

Below me are the Sticklebarn and New Dungeon Ghyll.

Descending to Side House

Looking up Stickle Ghyll....

The start of Blea Rigg 8 route......we did this route in the early 1990's as it seemed the most interesting route to Blea Rigg.

Side House

A very crowded car park at Stickle Ghyll. I could just pick out a spot of colour on Whitegill Crag

A big zoom picked them out.

I walked past the Sticklebarn....

.....and the NDG....

.....to take the Old Langdale road down the valley

Looking ahead along the Old Langdale Road....

.....and a look back.

At the end of the old road there was a few yards of road walking on the new road before taking a path down towards Oak Howe

The Langdales from the footbridge over Great Langdale Beck near Oak Howe.

My return was along the Cumbria Way passing Baysbrown Campsite.

New Bridge at Chapel Stile. built in 1818.

Chapel Stile

A bit of a lop-sided picture but I was on the main road with cars brushing my backside as I took it. I had decided today to forsake the pubs and cafe and instead to support the local shop. Sadly many shops in the valleys struggle to keep going so every bit helps.....Anyway a cold drink and a packet of fresh sandwiches were only a third of what I would have paid in the cafes.

And only a couple of minutes away a perfect spot to enjoy them.

A short walk back and I was soon back in Elterwater.

The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go to the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.

Next Walk:      14th August 2011 - NW Lancashire - A walk along the Lancaster Canal from Conder Green

Last Walk:       7th August 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - An evening on the Knott
