A Saturday morning walk in what as become over the years probably our favourite walking area. Although nowhere as dramatic as the Lake District this little corner of NW England is to me very special and what it lacks in height is more than made up for in it's scenery. I was by myself today and wanted to be back for around midday so this delightful little walk fitted the bill perfectly.

Route Map.

I left the car at the roadside near the school and walked back through the village which at 8:30am was just coming to life.

As I started to make my way across The Lots it was a gorgeous morning with the remnants of the inversion just burning back.

Looking over the shore side cottages towards the OFL of Humphrey Head. The tide which as already departed these sands is on the ebb.

Looking towards home from near Bank House where my path will take me down to The Cove.

Looking down on The Cove as I make my way down.

The Cove, Silverdale.

From The Cove I walked up the access lane to join the road from where a left turn and a couple of minutes walking brought me to the public footpath through Holgates Caravan & Camping site. I decided to walk up through the park towards Arnside Tower.

The public right of way through the park to the tower actually goes off to the left through the trees and down to a lane but I kept to the road to walk up to the top of the park to pick up another RoW which gave this.....

....view of Arnside Knott.

From the caravan park I walked down through the woods to the old Pele Tower of Arnside Tower.

Looking over Arnside Tower Farm to the Knott. My route would pass through the farmyard and along the access lane to the road where a right turn and 100 yards of walking would take me through an access gate onto the Knott.

Now at the road and looking back to the farm and tower.

Once through the access gate I went straight ahead to pick up a path that contours around to pick up a wall which I followed upwards. The wall eventually turns to the right and there is a gate ahead onto Red Hills.

Once through the gate I turned left to follow the path up Red Hills.

The views up the Kent estuary were not as good as what I had hoped for but no matter it is a wonderful morning.

I hadn't planned on seeing the cows this morning but I found them almost at the top of Red Hills.

Edith's favourite.....I could imagine what it was thinking....." Oh No!!!.....where's she at?....what's she brought today to try me on "

Heaven is.......An Arnside morning.

Looking over New Barns to Grange over Sands and the OFL of Hampsfell.

From the summit bench the Coniston Fells were playing hide & seek.

From the summit I made my way to the viewpoint. Perhaps it's clearing a little.

The viewpoint on the Knott is a lovely spot to linger awhile.

Looking over Heathwaite towards the OFL of Humphrey Head as I start my descent. A few yard down this wide track there is a narrow path going off to the left and through a wall which leads to the two benches above Heathwaite.

From the two bench seats the path drops down to cross the bridleway and down Heathwaite.

Looking over Hollins Farm.

Hollins Farm.

Herdwicks on holiday.

This la'al chappie as been alone in the fields leading to the caravan park for some time now. I felt a bit sorry for him.

Arnside Knott as I approach the caravan site.

Holgates clubhouse, cafe and swimming pool.

Back near The Cove and the Alpacas and Chucks are sharing some food.

Walking back across the fields to Silverdale I can see a group out on the sands....

which turns out to be a group doing the Cross-Bay walk. There doesn't appear to be very many of them today.

A last look back....

....before I return through the village back to the car.

The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go to the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.

Next Walk:     21st August 2011 - Yorkshire Dales (W) - Bleak Blea Moor from Ribblehead.

Last Walk:       19th August 2011 - Lake District - A 3 tarn tour from Tarn Hows.
