Sunderland Point has long been a favourite area of both Edith and I. It was here that we had our first walks together as a young couple back in 1962 when I was home on leave from the Merchant Navy and Edith lived nearby in the village of Overton. However I was by myself for this walk as I had not slept well and was up early. I could see the sky starting to colour as the sun started to rise so I grabbed the camera and within 10-15 minutes was parked up at Sunderland. A glorious short walk with familiar but fantastic views which I shall treasure for some time.
I arrived just as the sun was starting to peep over the hills of Bowland lighting up the shore and River Lune. Across the river there was a slight mist which added to a magical moment.
A moment or two later and with the camera on a wider view the sky was alight but the biggest surprise was yet to come.
Behind me, lit up by the rising sun I could see the Coniston Fells. However it wasn't until I downloaded the pictures onto the computer that I realised the Scafells were also in view. A quick check on Memory Map puts them at a distance of 35 miles away. Not bad for a shot from sea level.
It is at moments like these that I think I should really get one of those filter things for the camera but then always forget.
My pace was at first unhurried as I enjoyed the sun lighting up the shore, boats and buildings on my way to First Terrace.
Looking up the river away from the sun there was colour but not as pronounced.
Looking across the River Lune towards Glasson Dock and Clougha Pike.
Looking back along a sunlit First Terrace. It was now that my pace quickened a little as I wanted to get as much of the suns effect for as long as I could.
Looking back to First Terrace as I reach Second Terrace.
With the sun getting slightly higher the colour starts to fade as I look back along Second Terrace.
A still frosted seat. Although it was a few degrees below zero the air was still and didn't seem to bother me too much.
Looking towards the point and the Plover Scar lighthouse as I reach the Old Hall.
The Old Hall.
A look back as I near the point.
The eroded coastline at Sunderland Point.
Misty views across the river to Plover Scar.
My pace quickened a little as I walked around the point wondering if the view was going to be as good as what I hoped for.
I wasn't too be disappointed. Over frosted salt marsh the fells of Lakeland were there in all their glory. From the Conistons to the fells of Kentmere all shining in the morning light.
And with a big zoom the big fella's were still there. :-)
The other way lay the flatlands of Fylde with the Blackpool Tower reaching for the sky.
Soon I arrived at the grave....
....which had not yet caught the morning sun...
....but was, as always in a pristine condition.
From the grave I made my way to The Lane to return to First Terrace.
A look back along the lane with snowdrops in the hedgerow.
Now back at First Terrace and a short walk back to the car.
A local fisherman.
I made my way slowly back towards the car. This is a very special place for Edith and I and I was a wee bit sorry that she had missed it.
I walked past the car towards the embankment to see the boats there. They are in various states of repair...
....and there is even an opportunity to purchase.
