---------------------------------------------------------------

The day started dull & overcast but according to the forecast was due to brighten around midday so we were in no hurry to make a move. However around 09:00hrs I got a phone call asking if we could be available for the afternoon school run if needed. Answering in the affirmative meant a change of plans and an earlier start to do this short walk. I didn't want to do too much anyway as with the recent weather I find I am really struggling at the moment. Even the very gentlest of inclines means a stop every 50 paces or so to catch my breath. Anyway to the walk......

Route Map

We parked the car on a rough piece of ground at the side of the Arnside - Silverdale road near to Arnside Knott Farm & Tower. The views over to nearby Farleton Knott were a bit hazy but it was due to clear up.

Crossing the road and passing through a gate we took a path that contours around the eastern end of the Knott to reach...

..a wall which was followed upwards until it curls away to the right. There is a choice at this point, either to carry on straight ahead or to do as we did and follow the wall to the right to pass through a gate onto the open land of Red Hills.

After entering Red Hills take a turning to the left to head upwards. The advantage of this route is that the views quickly appear giving me plenty of opportunities to stop. Here we can see Whitbarrow with the "V" of Kirkstone behind.

A little higher and another stop for a view of the Howgills over Storth and Haverbrack.

A wider view as we near the top of Red Hills

A little bit of heaven.....One of my favourite viewpoints.

Looking over New Barns towards Grange over Sands...

...and to Hampsfell.

Whitbarrow over the railway viaduct with the Eastern & Far Eastern fells behind.

A short walk took us to the summit...

...and then to the seat with a view.

From the summit we made our way towards the viewpoint with a look down the bay along the way.

Looking over Heathwaite to Humphrey Head and the Furness peninsula beyond from the viewpoint.

Over New Barns to Grange an Hampsfell.

Unfortunately the Coniston Fells were not playing out today..

....but elsewhere the views were good.

With not a lot of time to linger we made our way down towards Heathwaite...

...with a brief stop near the twin seats for a look across and down the bay.

A perfect resting place.

As we reached the bridleway we had a choice. Either a direct route back to the car or a bit longer one via Hollins Farm. With enough time in hand we chose the latter.

A look back up Heathwaite as we walked down to Hollins Farm.

Hollins Farm.

From the farm we made our way across towards Holgates Caravan Park.

Crossing the fields towards the caravan park.

Humphrey Head as we cross the fields.

On reaching the perimeter of the caravan park we followed a road for a short while before picking up this path towards Arnside Tower.

By now I was struggling a bit. Even this incline had me wheezing and stopping every few yards.

However we eventually reached the old Pele Tower.

Looking over the farm to the Knott. The car is parked near the white vehicle on the right of the picture.

The old farm dog recognised Edith and came for a biscuit or three.

And finally....a short walk had us back to the car, still a bit mucky from yesterday afternoons visit to Sunderland Point the pictures from which are on our Facebook Page.
