After seeing the orchids and cowslips on some previous walks Edith wanted to visit Latterbarrow. I wasn't sure how I would be as the walk although short in normal terms it was a bit further than what I have been doing of late. However the climbing involved is very gentle and with the promise of a quirky cafe stop part way around we decided to give it a go.

Route

We parked next to the entrance to the Latterbarrow Nature Reserve on the old road near the Derby Arms.

Making our way through the reserve there were plenty of Cowslips and Early Purples to be seen.

In fact I don't think I have seen as many cowslips in quite a while.

At the far end of the reserve our path leads through a wooded area...

....and then up through the fields towards High Fell End.

Newton Fell from High Fell End.

We walked through High Fell End....

to exit onto a quiet road where a left turn and a few yards...

...took us to the start of the bridleway (l) which passes through the woods towards Witherslack Hall.

Eventually the bridleway leaves the woods to enter an area of open fellside...

...and sets off downwards towards Witherslack Hall.

Our route however is to the left and up onto the ridge of Yewbarrow

Although the day is fine and sunny it is terribly hazy and the Eastern & Far Eastern Fells ahead of us are just hazy silhouettes and not really worth taking a picture of today.

To our right Whitbarrow is a little nearer and clearer...

....and over to our left Gummer's How stands out.

We dropped down from the summit to pick up the bridleway again...

....which leads out into an open area near Lawns House....

....and then to Witherslack Hall farm...

Our route now led through High Crag and Low Crag Woods

...to the delightfully quirky Hiker's Rest cafe....

....where it's self service and pop your money through the letter box of the cottage next door, where incidentally one of Edith's Uncles used to live.

After a cuppa and cake it was a short walk down to Beck Head...

....and on to Mill Side from where we followed the quiet lane...

....back to Town End...

...and down to the Derby Arms...

And finally...back to the car.
